Ex-Firefox exec Shaver has plans for Facebook's Android app

Mike Shaver already announced last year he was moving to Facebook after resigning as vice president of technical strategy for Firefox.

And now we know what he'll be doing there: engineering manager for Android app development.

Given the immense membership of Facebook, there are few mobile apps in the world that are as important as Facebook's. The company announced in December that Facebook has 800 million users.

Shaver tweeted on Friday, "This week I started as the eng mgr for Facebook's Android team. Doing cool stuff -- some probably obvious, some rather not. And hiring!" … Read more

Mozilla loses strategy exec Mike Shaver

Mike Shaver, vice president of technical strategy at Mozilla and an influential Firefox executive, is leaving the nonprofit that develops the open-source browser.

Shaver had worked directly for Mozilla for six years, though he worked longer before that as part of the volunteer community around the software project. He announced the departure on his blog yesterday:

I've decided that it's time for me to move on from the Mozilla Corporation, where I have enjoyed 6 years surrounded by incredible people doing incredible things on (and to) the Web. I haven't yet decided what's next, though I … Read more

Philips flags off with the F1 AT&T Williams Shaver

With Formula One's first-ever night race about to burn rubber on Singapore roads this September, there'll be no putting the brakes on vendors quick to sip from this trophy cup.

Among those warming up their engines at the starting line is Philips. Its $155 AT&T Williams Shaver HQ 7390 will be steering onto retail shelves in the same month.

Co-designed by Philips and apparently key members of the design team behind Williams' 2008 Formula One car, the WilliamsToyota FW30, it features Nico Rosberg's racing number for the 2008 season, No. 7, below the start button. … Read more

Mozilla responds: Firefox is independent

In this interview, Mozilla's technology strategist Mike Shaver responds to and rejects recent claims that Firefox and Google are getting a bit too close for comfort. Mozilla is independent, he says, with or without Google's $56 million.

I received a fair bit of criticism for a blog post that I wrote last week describing what I believe is the extremely close relationship between Google and Mozilla. Mozilla's PR people complained, Firefox developers left critical comments in the blog post itself, and I received a number of e-mails from upset individuals. All had concerns with the claims and … Read more

Solar energy for good grooming

Wristwatches are hardly the only personal effects that are increasingly harnessing solar energy, but this is the first we've encountered that's used to tame a beard. The "Solar Energy Shaver from Sabeco can operate on the sun's rays alone, according to Red Ferret, though charge times, pricing and other specs weren't available.

It does leave us wondering when, however, such a product would be particularly useful. Usually solar-powered gadgets make the most sense for, say, such venues as camp sites where AC outlets are scarce to none. But isn't that the best excuse not … Read more

Zen and the art of shaving

We may be a fun-loving lot here at Crave, but there are some things we take very seriously--like shaving. There have been a fair number of silly USB and other novelty razers on the market of late, but we'll have none of that, thank you.

We reserve our attention for substantive grooming hardware, or at least those products that claim to be, such as the "Axis" line of shavers. They promise the "closest shave yet," according to Cool Hunting, though we've all heard that before. But one thing we do appreciate is their promise … Read more
