There have been a number of apps that duplicated this dramatic style of slow panning over images, but they have often been too complicated or the interface so unintuitive that people simply wouldn't bother. But PhotoToaster, made by the same developers, is one of my favorite photo editors, so I was excited to see how they would handle an entirely different process for creating photo projects. … Read more
Uber's surge pricing has proven to be a sure-fire way to get users up in arms. But, it appears the ride-sharing company is working to placate that anger.
The company's CEO Travis Kalanick announced Monday that Uber is planning to send app push notifications to users when surge pricing subsides -- that way, users will know when fares have returned to normal rates, according to GeekWire.
"One of our goals for 2014 is bringing humanity to our communications," Kalanick said at the Launch Festival on Monday, according to GeekWire.
Surge pricing is when Uber charges extra … Read more

VSCO Cam is an elegant photo effects app with a minimalist interface, which lets you create great-looking shots in only a few steps.
VSCO Cam has been available since mid-2013, but the latest release of the app adds a whole new social layer with a photo feed that's sort of similar to what you get on Instagram. Unlike Instagram, the news feed (called "The Grid") is curated by VSCO Cam and doesn't have nearly the user base of Instagram, nor does it have the same controls for "liking" or commenting on photos. But where … Read more

The company repurchased $14 billion of its own shares in two weeks, according to The Wall Street Journal. Apple CEO Tim Cook told the Journal Thursday that he intends for the move to be both "aggressive" and "opportunistic."

Twitter shares have slid more than 22 percent in early trading Thursday as shareholders take a step back on word of a disappointing fourth quarter.
The dip -- to just over $50, well down from the Wednesday closing price of $65.97 -- comes after Twitter acknowledged Wednesday that while its total monthly active user tally is up to 241 million, a 30 percent increase year over year, its service's design poses too much of a challenge for users to actually use the service, hence the slowdown in the growth of new users. Twitter also expressed concern that existing … Read more

It's certainly not unusual for an acquiring company's … Read more
Paper, from the people at Facebook, lets you browse statuses and other news categories using a new, more visual interface than what you're used to with the official Facebook app. Mysteriously, the app is iPhone-only at the time of this writing, but it seems like it would be a great fit for iPad.
Taking a page from Flipboard, Facebook Paper delivers a tiled interface that shows your standard Facebook news feed, but also gives you curated news content organized by category. That combination makes Facebook Paper a distinct and more robust product that's meant to complement, rather than … Read more

The strong showing this morning is largely the result of Facebook's strong performance last year. Facebook said Wednesday that it generated $7.9 billion revenue last year, up from the $5.1 billion the company tallied in 2012. Facebook also grew its profits … Read more
