Apple's Chinese suppliers still exploiting workers, says report

Apple has so far failed in its responsibility to monitor its Chinese suppliers for worker violations, claims a labor watchdog group.

In a report released yesterday, Student & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM) accused three of Apple's Chinese suppliers of inhumane worker conditions. The three suppliers -- Foxlink, Pegatron, and Wintek -- fail to provide for basic human needs and continue to use student workers, according to SACOM.

'No more iSlave:' An activist fights for iPhone workers

HONG KONG -- Debby Chan may not have the answer to the terribly complex issues facing workers at the giant Chinese contract manufacturing plants where iPhones are assembled.

But she has plenty of questions.

Chan's modest office here, shared with another human rights activist, is cluttered with books and papers. Posters hang from the walls, questioning the legitimacy of Burma's 2010 elections. Foxconn: No delays in iPad supply after explosion

The explosion at a Foxconn factory on Friday that killed 3 workers and injured another 15 will not affect production of Apple's iPad or iPhone, according to comments made by the company yesterday.

The factory near Chengdu, China, has temporarily suspended production while police investigate the explosion.

In a meeting with suppliers yesterday, Terry Gou, chairman of Foxconn parent company Hon Hai, reportedly emphasized that the explosion would not delay iPad 2 production or new products related to the iPad or iPhone that are set for production in the third quarter, according to China Times (Google Translate version).
