Saab to live on as electric car manufacturer

The show's not over for Saab. An investment group agreed to buy the Swedish automotive manufacturer and plans to build electric cars for the Asian market, according to an article in the Detroit Free Press.

Saab's savior is a Chinese-Japanese investment group, whose key player is energy tycoon Kai Johan Jiang. Jiang founded the alternative energy supplier National Bio-Energy Group in China, and his other company, the National Modern Energy Holdings, owns 51 percent of National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB, the company set up to buy Saab, according to BusinessWeek. The remaining 49 percent of National Electric Vehicle … Read more

Saab: Killing it softly

Saab's struggle for survival ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper, as a final deal to save it is blocked by GM.

The company, founded in 1947 and owned by GM since 2000, was due to be shut down in 2009 as GM consolidated its brands. Victor Muller, former CEO of Spyker Cars, threw Saab a lifeline, taking over the company and attempting to arrange financing.

Most recently, Chinese automaker Youngman Automobile Group was set to purchase Saab. But GM, which still owns Saab technology licenses, spiked the deal by refusing to extend the licensing to Youngman. … Read more

Another look at Saab's Android infotainment platform

Although it's one of the smaller makes in the automotive industry, Saab revealed an infotainment system that shows it still can hang with the big boys.

Making its debut in the Phoenix concept car this week at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the Saab iQon is an Android-based infotainment system that uses downloadable apps to bring navigation, entertainment, and diagnostics functionality into the vehicle.

Saab's iQon similar to GM's MyLink or Toyota's Entune infotainment system--both of which use a QNX-based platform--but instead of relying on the user's mobile phone and data plan for a connection, … Read more

Most Saab 9-4Xs are headed for U.S.

LOS ANGELES--Saab expects 75 percent of 9-4X output to go to the United States. But even so, the number isn't large by industry standards.

The 9-4X is Saab's new crossover, developed with former owner General Motors Co.

9-4X output will average 12,500 units annually when full production is reached next year, said Jan Ake Jonsson, CEO of Saab Automobile AB. Jonsson said it is a conservative production forecast. About 9,400 are for the United States, he said.

"It is not that we don't believe in the car. We are trying to be responsible in … Read more

Saab to unveil 9-4X at LA Auto Show

Saab released photos of its upcoming 9-4X crossover SUV that will be unveiled at the upcoming 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The third addition to the Saab line up is an inherited product from the old GM roadmap, but it's a much needed vehicle to cater to the growing crossover segment if the brand is going to survive. In the U.S., the 9-4X will be available with either an entry-level 265 horsepower 3-liter V-6 engine or, in the top-of-the-line Aero trim, a 300 horsepower 2.8-liter V-6 turbo engine. Europe will also get a diesel. All models will … Read more
