Set Twitter's Connect tab to only show mentions on Android, iOS

When using Twitter on your Android or iOS device, the Connect tab is where you can find all of your interactions (by default as of an update in February) such as mentions, retweets, and new followers. While this may be the desired view for some, for others it can lead to a cluttered experience.

Luckily there's a simple solution to remove retweets and new followers from the Connect tab.

Using either the iOS or Android version of the app, you'll first need to navigate to your "Me" or profile tab. From there tap on the Settings … Read more

Obama 'four more years' tweet skyrockets to No. 1 retweet

A tweet sent this evening by President Obama minutes after winning re-election has quickly become the most retweeted message ever.

Obama's official Twitter account -- which now has more than 22 million followers -- posted a photo of the President hugging First Lady Michelle Obama, with the message "Four more years."

The tweet quickly logged more than 350,000 retweets and 100,000 votes as favorite tweets, easily surpassing a Justin Bieber tweet grieving the passing of Avalanna Routh, a young fan who died … Read more

Obama's same-sex marriage tweet goes viral

At 12:18 PT this afternoon, shortly after President Obama got on TV and publicly announced for the first time that he supports same-sex marriage, this tweet was posted on his Twitter page:

"Same-sex couples should be able to get married." --President Obama

Just eight hours later, this tweet had been retweeted more than 50,000 times... and counting.

Normally, people can only see up to 50 retweets on Twitter's own counter. But these numbers are being tallied by a customized ticker made by "evangelist/hacker" Michael Schonfeld, according to tech news site The Next Web. … Read more

How to see your retweets on Twitter

Twitter is gradually removing the Retweets tab from all accounts and merging it into the @username tab.

Editors' note: Unfortunately this quick fix was short-lived. However, this author is still seeking a new solution that isolates the retweets from other content on Twitter. If you have a suggestion or know of a solution, please add it to the comments, or share it with the author at cozdroid@gmail.com.

If you're running a Twitter account for a business, or if you're just curious about your personal reach within your followers, it can be difficult to sort through the @… Read more

'Woot' is officially a thing, according to Oxford English Dictionary

August marks the 100th anniversary of the Concise Oxford English Dictionary (COED), the smaller but most widely recognized derivative of the official Oxford English Dictionary, or OED. To celebrate, the lexicon published its 12th edition today that adds more than 400 new entries--many of which reflect the technological pervasiveness of modern society, like "woot," "mankini," and "jeggings."

COED Editor Angus Stevenson heads up a small team at the Oxford University Press's academic cabinet tasked with choosing the next words for inclusion, and the process involves keying popular words into a database that shows frequency of use in print and online.

Since publishing its first edition back in 1911, the COED's evolution shows the tremendous effects of social media and instant-access technology on language, creating new words but also modifying existing definitions of words like "follower."

What once meant "a person who imitates or copies" now earns a second and more widely used meaning: "someone who is tracking a particular person, group, etc., on a social networking site." Another example that's a little unsettling is the general term "friend" that loses gravity in its new form: "a contact on a social networking Web site."… Read more

New Twitter features focus on you, those you follow

Twitter is rolling out a couple of new features that should help you find more revelant tweets, especially those that involve you.

As of yesterday, the microblogging site is replacing the familiar Mentions tab with a new tab that displays your username, according to the company's official blog. Clicking on your username tab will reveal more than just tweets in which you're mentioned. You'll be able to see which of your own tweets are considered Favorites or are retweeted by someone also. You'll also see tweets directed to you and which tweets are popular among the … Read more

Chinese woman arrested on wedding day for retweet

One of the tech world's greatest lawyers told me the other day that he thought the retweet was the greatest way of saying something truly nasty about another person without having to write it yourself.

However, some authorities are, perhaps, becoming wise to this secondary insult market.

According to UPI, Cheng Jianping, a human rights activist in China, retweeted something written by her fiance on Twitter. His tweet was a slightly sarcastic note concerning supposed Chinese nationalists who had decided to smash up Japanese products because of a dispute between China and Japan over the East China Sea islands … Read more

The short, sweet life of a retweet

New research from social-analytics company Sysomos reveals--surprise!--that your tweets have fleeting value over the course of a day and, moreover, a lifetime.

Using the retweet as a key indicator for the life of a short message, Sysomos examined 1.2 billion tweets posted in the last two months. The data shows that 29 percent of tweets produced a reaction, either a reply or retweet, and that 92 percent of retweets occur within the first hour of the original message.

This is an interesting set of data, with respect to the fact that companies have begun to embrace social media … Read more
