There are some things about which Google doesn't comment. However, it is entirely true that many Google employees are human beings with feelings, sometimes even strong ones.

So, though the company itself refused to go into detail after an employee was reportedly fired for leaking news of a $1,000 cash bonus and 10 percent raise for every one of Google's more than 23,000 employees, there are Googlies who are whispering that they'd like to say something publicly. They'd like some of the internal feelings to be made known.

Report: Google fires engineer who leaked raise memo

If you don't want anyone to know about something you've done, then you shouldn't do it.

Such words, first offered by Google CEO Eric Schmidt, might just occasionally be revolving around the Google compound this morning. Word has leaked out that the engineer who leaked a memo announcing that every Google employee would get a 10 percent pay raise has been fired.

According to CNN Money, Google took the draconian action and announced it to its staff. Visual evidence of this announcement is, as yet, strangely lacking.

While Google has declined to comment to several news outlets … Read more

Apple raises 3G download limit to 20MB

Apple has raised the maximum size of app downloads over a 3G connection to 20MB, in what developer site Appadvice says is preparation for the iPad launch.

In the past, iPhone app downloads were limited to less than 10MB over a 3G connection. If you wanted to download larger apps, you had to use Wi-Fi. This limitation may have been placed on the iPhone at the request of wireless carriers in an effort to preserve bandwidth.

iPad apps will be larger downloads, mainly because they will have to support higher-resolution graphics. New apps such as the iLife suite for the … Read more

Barn raisings weatherize homes to cut energy bills

You could call us the "caulk gun militia."

Last month, I joined about 40 other volunteers, armed to the teeth with materials to weatherize a two-family home. Despite the rain and a few errant squirts of insulating foam, we made the leaky New England home significantly more energy efficient, largely by sealing all manner of leaks.

We won't know the financial impact of our work until after the winter months, but it will undoubtedly lower the residents' heating and electricity bills in future years. Along the way, we learned a few things we could do at our … Read more

PGP, IBM help Bletchley Park raise funds

A campaign will be launched on Tuesday to ask U.S. tech companies to help save Bletchley Park, whose wartime work helped lay the foundations of modern computing and crytography.

The fund-raising campaign will be led by cryptography provider PGP, together with IBM and other technology firms. Purdue set for supercomputer 'barn-raising'

Purdue University on Monday plans to install a new supercomputer on its campus in a single day, in an effort it's calling an "electronic barn-raising."

Approximately 200 employees will help build the machine, which will be the size of a semi trailer and is expected to have a peak performance of more than 60 teraflops, which means it would be able to perform more than 60 trillion operations in one second, according to a Purdue press release.

Once it's completed, Purdue's supercomputer still won't top the list of the 500 fastest supercomputers, though the … Read more
