Puma Phone review: Sporty and solar-powered

When a phone can grab attention at the hand-set frenzy that it is Mobile World Congress, you know it must be pretty special. And last year, at least, that's what's happened with the Puma Phone. Though it competed with flashy Andorid smartphones from HTC Samsung and Sony Ericsson, most everyone we talked to managed to find time to get a peek at the handset.

So what's so special you ask? For starters, it has an appealing design that shows a bit of style (if you love the color red, you'll adore the Puma Phone). It also … Read more

GM to show EN-V mobility device at CES 2011

The next stop for GM's Electric Networked Vehicle(EN-V) concept is the upcoming 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in January. In addition to its next-generation infotainment system, the carmaker will be showing off the three electric two-seater concepts it debuted at the 2010 Expo in Shanghai last March.

The personal mobility vehicles are one-third the size of typical cars, offer a 25-mile electric range, and are built on Segway's self-balancing two-wheeled PUMA platform. But the EN-V is more than just an upgraded Segway: it's equipped with drive-by-wire technology, and its carbon-fiber body is outfitted with GPS, distancing-sensing, vehicle-to-vehicle … Read more

Intel to buy Texas Instruments' cable modem unit

Intel said Monday it agreed to acquire Texas Instruments' cable modem unit as it tries to expand markets for its Atom processor line.

The acquisition is a good fit with Intel's CE line of system-on-a-chip (SOC) Atom processors, the company said. "The purchase enhances Intel's focus on the cable industry...where the company's expertise in building advanced system-on-chip products, based on Intel Atom processors, will be applied," Intel said in a statement.

Intel plans to combine TI's Puma product lines with Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS)-based technology (for defining compatibility between … Read more

Puma unboxes new eco packaging

The cat's reducing its carbon paw print with a shoebox that's more bag than cardboard. Showcased recently at the Design Museum in London, the new packaging will supposedly help the lifestyle apparel company reduce paper use by 65 percent and carbon emissions by 10,000 tons every year.

The Clever Little Bag, designed by Yves Behar of fuseproject, reduces cardboard use and does away with the need for a plastic carrier bag. Instead, the package features a reusable shoebag with an attached loop that goes through a cutout to double as a carrying handle.

According to Puma, the … Read more

The 404 543: Where we can't stop staring at Nintendo's 3DS (podcast)

Pucker up! The 404 Podcast cordially invites you to help us celebrate Kiss An Asian Day! Wilson and I are clearly delighted with this extremely made-up holiday, whereas Jeff couldn't be stuck in a more compromising position. Yesterday also happened to be International Talk Like William Shatner Day, so the first story in today's rundown is about his new social network that is aimed at sci-fi nerds. Myouterspace.com is still in beta (Shatner's Twitter is apparently taking suggestions), but the site promises to be "a sci-fi social network for those with a passion for the arts." In my best Shatner voice: that...sounds...very...lame.

Today, Nintendo announced the next generation of its popular DS portable gaming platform, and, of course, it's in 3D. The Nintendo 3DS will officially see a release at this year's E3 conference in June, but so far we know that the device will be backward compatible with DS and DSi games and won't require you wear special goggles for 3D gameplay. Here's hoping that the 3DS will be a little more fun than Nintendo's first foray into 3D gaming.

CNET audio expert Steve Guttenberg stops by on the second half to pimp his ongoing contest, "The Audiophillie Music Awards for Excellence in Recorded Sound." Keep in mind that this is not "American Idol," so entries won't be judged by musical talent, but rather on the quality of the recording itself. This is your chance to prove your recording skills and promote your favorite unsigned band, so submit your entry on a CD and you'll be entered to win one of six pairs of Monster Turbine Copper or Monster Turbine Gold in-ear headphones!

Click here for official rules and an entry form (must complete and send along with CD). The contest ends on April 17, so good luck, everyone!

Puma Phone pounces into action

BARCELONA, Spain--I think I just found my favorite phone (though the HTC Legend comes in a close second) of Mobile World Congress 2010 and it's from someone completely unexpected: Puma. Yes, the same Puma who makes the shoes, sportswear, and accessories.

OK, maybe I'm just a sucker for a cool gimmick but it's always nice to see something completely different like the Puma Phone. Plus, it looks to be quite a competent phone and it's apparent that the company put a lot of thought into the integrated features.

The handset itself is manufactured by Sagem and … Read more

AMD's Puma ready to pounce

This time around, AMD is ready with a major product launch on schedule, and is enjoying a bit of good fortune as well.

Notebook makers of all stripes are getting ready to launch systems based on AMD's Puma notebook technology, which consists of a new processor, a mobile chipset, and wireless chips from AMD's partners. The official announcement is expected to come later Wednesday at the Computex trade show in Taiwan, and notebooks with the chips will be arriving over the next several weeks from companies like Acer, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Toshiba, said Bahr Mahony, director of AMD'… Read more

AMD revisits Puma mobile technology, again

AMD is announcing its future Puma mobile technology yet again. This time at CeBit.

On Tuesday, the news headlines for AMD's Puma mobile technology demonstration at CeBit used words like "launches" and "formally announces." But this is neither a launch nor a formal announcement.

To be fair to AMD, spokesman Scott Carroll said this Tuesday: "No, it hasn't been launched and won't be launched until Q2." And he added: "Today at CeBit we unveiled our first working demo of a Puma platform and demonstrated its graphics capabilities vs. our existing … Read more

AMD triple core is for business, Puma whispers

Roadmaps are made to be changed. And in the case of AMD quad-core processor timelines, quite often. That said, they provide a clear blueprint to work from. The most recent AMD roadmap (dated late January) indicates that triple-core processors are coming fairly soon (March at the latest) and that they are initially targeted at commercial users.

On the chart, "triple-core" is clumped with the "Hardcastle" and "Perseus" business platforms, meaning that triple-core is initially a commercial offering--and AMD confirms this.

The chart also shows quad-core Opteron, a.k.a. "Barcelona," production beginning … Read more
