LookAway works, but that's about it

LookAway Player mimics the Smart Pause feature that will (as of this writing) soon be coming to the Galaxy S4, automatically pausing a video when you look away from your iPhone.

The app functions on YouTube only, so you will only be able to use LookAway Player's features on YouTube videos. In my testing it worked pretty much as advertised. Simply play a YouTube video, and when you turn your head to look away, facial-recognition software automatically pauses the video. When you turn back toward your iPhone, the video starts up again. It also worked when I looked down, … Read more

Galaxy S4 to offer eye-tracking Smart Scroll, screenshots suggest

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S4 will offer a Smart Scroll feature, at least according to a series of screenshots leaked by blog site Sammobile.

Images posted on the site show a settings screen for Smart Scroll, a feature that allows users to scroll through the screen and perform certain tasks merely by moving their eyes up and down.

Citing information from a person who has used the yet-to-be-announced phone, the New York Times reported on Monday that Smart Scroll would be built into the S4. The feature would monitor the movement of users' eyes and move the screen accordingly. As … Read more

Some printers pausing after installing Lion

A few OS X users who have upgraded to Lion may find that certain printers they have installed may pause when print jobs are sent to them. The printers are still installed as they were before upgrading, and print jobs will spool to the printer queues, but once in the queue, the job pauses.

Some people have found this to happen with certain networked Xerox printers, but it may happen to others as well.

It turns out in some instances the OS upgrade process may reconfigure printers to use a different connection protocol than the one that was designated before … Read more

Intermittent freezes could be a failing hard drive

Older computers will often start to slow down for no apparent reason. Even when not used frequently, slowdowns may occur where the system may pause for a few seconds and then run fine for a little while. In OS X, when these pauses occur you may see the spinning color wheel and not be able to do anything with your system until the problem resolves itself.

Usually these pauses are a result of hardware I/O problems, where the system is waiting for a local hardware device to resume proper communication. Though improperly configured drivers for peripheral devices are likely … Read more

Pause-and-play radio trickles down to Buick Regal, Chevy Cruze

Pause-and-play radio is a neat feature built into a few high-end General Motors models, such as the Cadillac CTS and SRX. According the GM, the Buick Regal and the budget-priced Chevy Cruze will be joining the ranks of vehicles that can benefit from this option. Pause-and-play allows you to pause live radio (AM, FM, or XM Satellite radio) for up to 20 minutes and resume playback later--sort of like a TiVo for cars.

The system even works when a vehicle is turned off. For example, if you're listening to your favorite talk radio program during your commute to work, … Read more
