Secure your iPhone with strong yet easy to enter passcode

You have three choices for securing your iPhone:

1. No passcode

2. A simple, four-digit passcode

3. A longer passcode for added security

The last option is obviously your best option if security is of the utmost concern, but entering a long passcode on the alphanumeric keyboard can be laborious. Unless... you choose only numbers.

If you create a long passcode that consists of only numbers, your iPhone will give you the numeric keyboard, which has fewer and larger keys than the alphanumeric keyboard.

To set a longer passcode, go to Settings > General > Passcode Lock. Next, turn Simple … Read more

iPhone passcode cracking is easier than you think

A report came out last fall suggesting that repeating one number in the iPhone's four-digit security PIN made for better protection than using all unique numbers. However, that little trick doesn't seem to go very far with Micro Systemation, a Swedish security firm that helps police and military around the world crack digital security systems.

The company released a video last week that shows just how easy it is to break into a passcode-protected iPhone or Android device.

The video, "Recovering the Passcode from an iPhone," tapes a demonstration where a company spokesman uses an application … Read more

How to set a stronger iPhone passcode

If your iPhone passcode is 1234, you might as well disable it. In fact, if it's in the top 10 of the most common iPhone passcodes, it's not really doing you a whole lot of good. To keep your iPhone secure should it fall into the wrong hands, you might want to think about choosing another four-digit code. Better yet, you can create a custom passcode that will make your iPhone much more secure. It's a snap. Here's how:… Read more

Apple to fix iPhone security flaw in next iOS

Apple has acknowledged a newly-discovered security flaw in the iPhone and is promising to offer a fix with next month's release of iOS 4.2.

The new flaw allows someone to access the phone dialer on a locked iPhone by punching a certain sequence of buttons, thereby giving them the ability to make phone calls, send e-mails, and access the address book. Confirmed by Wired Magazine, the Boy Genius Report, and other online sources, the flaw was reportedly first discovered and posted by a user on the MacRumors online forum on October 22.

Bypassing the lock requires someone to … Read more

iPhone Insurance: Are We in Good Hands Yet?

Within the span of the weeks since I last wrote about the iPhone, its ubiquity has grown even more. Sales are through the roof. iPhones and PDAs have been used in jury trials or should I say mistrials. Half of all web mobile device traffic is conducted on iPhones. Applications are blossoming. More goodies such as the 3.0 OS are in the pipeline. Even my die-hard Verizon holdout friends have made the switch to the network that constantly drops calls.

I've settled into a comfort, perhaps even complacency, with the iPhone of late. I used to be a … Read more

Can I see your iPhone? Prying eyes want to know...

One of the inherent risks of having an iPhone will necessarily mean that you will become a de facto sales rep for Apple.

It's not uncommon for co-workers, non-iPhone-laden friends or strangers asking to 'see' your iPhone. "See?" Is that the right word? No, perhaps play and fool around with your iPhone is a better description as you can plainly see an iPhone, but these people clearly want to touch it to believe it as the Apple ads direct them to do. It happens to me enough to make me feel like a roving iPhone sales rep. … Read more
