Think outside the leftovers

Leftover turkey offers a seemingly endless supply of options for meal times, with the key word being "seemingly." No matter how delicious or succulent the Thanksgiving bird may have been, there comes a time to quit turkey, uh, cold turkey.

When looking for something different in the kitchen it is not always a matter of shoving leftovers aside while rooting about in the fridge. Sometimes what is needed to move outside of the comfort zone of comfort food is an appliance that requires one to think outside the box.

Used to make little spheres of deliciousness, the Electric Ebelskiver MakerRead more

Puffy pancakes with a flick of the switch

Kitchen electrics have a tendency to make us rationalize their existence. Perhaps it is convenience that is the deciding factor, or maybe an appliance's design appeals to us somehow. And then every once in a while, an appliance comes along that manages to give us some new way--or thing--to cook. Sometimes, appliances can even help us do something that otherwise we would not be able to do.

There can't be too many ways to cook ebelskivers. The distinctive round puffy pancakes require indentations to cook properly that only a specially designed pan can deliver. Either that or the … Read more

Like an indoor grill for pancakes

There is something special about pancakes. Somehow hearty yet impossibly fluffy at the same time, pancakes are a perfect component of practically any breakfast. Certainly sausages drowned in maple syrup wouldn't be quite the same without them. Even when served alone, pancakes offer a filling deliciousness that cannot be equaled by any other breakfast food. Unfortunately for pancake fans, they just don't seem to find their way onto plates enough.

Whether pancake scarcity is due to the amount of time needed, difficulty level, or both, there is no reason to get worked up into a pancake panic. The … Read more

Pancake Pen makes breakfast easier

The last time I went to the grocery store, I saw premade pancake batter in the dairy aisle. From what I've heard, it's OK; however, I'm sure it doesn't really compare with my family's pancake recipe. But I kept thinking about the container--it looks easier to use if you want to pour batter into a mold or a waffle iron. The Pancake Pen provides the same service, while still letting you mix up that secret family recipe. You can mix your batter up in the bottle of the Pancake Pen, screw on the lid and … Read more

The short stack gets automated

For the chef planning on feeding a big breakfast crowd, the ChefStack Automatic Pancake Machine is a lifesaver.

The automated flapjack maker is able to produce a pancake every 30 seconds, stacking them in a neat little pile on the side while you spend your time frying eggs and sausage. And you needn't worry about preparing the batter either, as the machine is designed to use ready-made batter pouches.

Understandably, this type of machine lends itself well to larger crowds, as in cafeterias and convenience stores. Taking up about as much real estate as a microwave, it provides a … Read more

Gadgettes 149: The single-purpose gadgets episode

OK. So we promised you on last week's episode that we would do a single-purpose gadgets episode this week. Turns out, promising that type of thing in advance isn't such a good idea as we actually had to work to find gadgets that fit the theme. So we made it, but admittedly by the skin of our collective teeth. It's all worth it for the segments, though. Patience, young grasshopper!

The pan comes from Nordic Ware and has a non-stick surface that's also heat-reflective, offering uniform browning for your pancakes. The pan offers seven different sections into which you can pour pancakes, each with its own bug theme: a dragonfly, snail, butterfly, ladybug, … Read more

The 404 285: Where Tuesday is not fat; it's big-boned

Jeff Bakalar makes his return on Fat Tuesday--how appropriate. Justin reveals to the world that he loves Alvin & the Chipmunks, on top of his fascination with Disney music. Disney we can forgive, but really? An Alvin & the Chipmunks cover of "Uptown Girl?" And we figure out that Alvin wears a giant "A" because he's committed adultery.

On today's show, Justin learns some new racial slurs from Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino." Jeff tells us to check out Mickey Rourke in "The Wrestler"and reveals to us that he once was a professional wrestler known as "The Flying Daisy." In actual news, newspapers are asking the federal government for a bailout. Get with it! Newspapers are going the way of the dodo. On top of that, it's National Pancake Day, so head on over to your local IHOP! Let Fat Tuesday's debauchery begin in earnest.… Read more
