Motorola could help cure ailing Google TV

Look at what the cable companies found on their doorstep this morning.

Google announced today that it is acquiring Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, a whopper deal that gives Google important handset know-how and patents. You can read more about that here.

But the acquisition also means that Google is now one of the world's biggest set-top box makers and therefore now part of the cable industry's distribution chain. Shudder. Remember, earlier this year that Motorola split itself into two separate independent companies, Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility. The latter half got control of the handset business … Read more

Freddie, Fannie reject energy retrofit loans

The Federal Housing Finance Agency announced Tuesday that the Property Assessed Clean Energy, or PACE program, backed by the Department of Energy and the Obama administration, is unacceptable for mortgage lenders to allow in its current form.

It's a move that will affect the program and those like them significantly as the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) regulates Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the 12 Federal Home Loan Banks.

The PACE program offers loans to owners of residential or commercial properties for the purpose of retrofitting their properties with green tech options like solar panels. The loan, which is … Read more

Multicar crash at Daytona

I'm sure all of you auto racing fans are looking forward to this weekend, as on Sunday, Nascar presents one of the most famous events in modern racing history: the Daytona 500. The action at Daytona International Speedway is already underway with the Budweiser Shootout practice that took place last week, and if you think it was an uneventful precursor to the big race at Daytona this Sunday, then you were wrong. Why? Because Nascar got a start to its 2010 season not with a bang, but with a crunch as multiple cars became entangled in a nasty bang-up … Read more

Dated word game

Quacky is a word game that challenges users to create as many words as possible out of a set of letters in a given amount of time. Although the premise of the game is fun, the ancient-looking interface makes it kind of a drag to play.

The look of the game reminds us of a Web page circa 1998, replete with crinkly-paper-looking background image. Users can choose to play on their own or with other players, which requires users to download the Tams11 Gaming Lobby in order to connect. We've seen other word games that are similar to this … Read more

The 404 413: Where we're carved out of wood

Yesterday's show with guest host Alli went so well that we ask her to help us out again! Today we show off some beautiful fan artwork, run through outdated tech terminology, dispel "Batman 3" rumors about Megan Fox, and more!

We want to give a huge shout-out and thanks to Joe from Honolulu for sending us these two amazing woodcarvings of The 404! We're still blown away by the level of detail in the paintings and the ridiculous amount of time it probably took to make. Best of all, we love that it's a collaborative effort between two 404 fans: Blake Stevenson helped design our logo and Joe just took it to the next level. Cheers to both of you!

We're all a little worried about Chris Nolan's next "Batman" movie. We've been hearing a lot of rumors about the follow-up to last year's "Dark Knight," and even though we think Megan Fox is next level hot, we just can't imagine her as Catwoman. First of all, there are one thousand other characters in the Batman universe, why resurrect the same ones over and over? Let's see a Killer Croc! In other Megan Fox news, gamers will be excited to hear that she will be on Xbox Live on Saturday, August 29 @ 3 p.m. PT to play Gold Members in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen the Game. Cross your fingers and let us know if you actually play her!

Many more crazy stories from the Web in addition to an "Ask The 404" segment on today's show. Thanks for listening, all!

Seagate Showcase DVR expander certified for Pace boxes

There's a good chance you've never heard of Pace, but back in April, the company--a developer of cable and satellite set-top box digital video recorders--acquired the set-top box and connectivity solutions business of Royal Philips Electronics. That fact has very little to do with this post, other than to give you an idea of the size of Pace and how it has its DVRs running in more than 17 million homes. (Pace DVRs work in any regions that are serviced by Comcast and/or Dish Network.)

So maybe you have a Pace box in your home right now … Read more
