Apple's iPhoto finally credits OpenStreetMap data

Apple has finally acknowledged the use of OpenStreetMap data in its iOS iPhoto app, the open-source mapping project said yesterday.

The iPhoto app, a photo-sorting tool for the iPad and iPhone, switched from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap (OSM) data back in March. The app uses mapping data so it can display the shoot location of geotagged photos.

Find and show your way around with OpenStreetmap

It's a common thing in the U.S. when you look up driving directions on Google (or Yahoo) maps, print them out prior to a trip. Personally, I use the Google Map app on my iPhone very frequently. However, finding the way around in other cities around the world, especially in the less developed regions, is a different story.

Flickr taps into open source for better maps. Yahoo Maps to follow?

Flickr is now utilizing maps from the wiki-based Open Street Map project to improve the detail level on cities where Yahoo's maps fall short. The first city to get the treatment is Beijing in honor of the Olympics. Flickr has posted before and after shots and the difference is profound. What was once a brown blob now has streets, landmarks, and of course geotagged shots.
