When droids break their huddle

ORLANDO, Fla.--When you're lucky, you're lucky. And on Saturday, I was lucky.

At about 9:20 a.m. Saturday, walking into the Orange County Convention Center here, where the massive Celebration V "Star Wars" fan fest is being held, I stumbled onto a scent that could only be described as geek heaven: a group picture of dozens of droid builders and their motley collection of R2-D2s and other creations based on George Lucas' sci-fi saga.

I wasn't the only one, of course. There were many people gathered around watching the scene unfold, including an … Read more

George Lucas on making 'Star Wars': 'It helps to be nuts'

ORLANDO, Fla.--You'd think, with all the resources at his disposal, "Star Wars" creator George Lucas would be pleased, if not all that impressed, to see the flood of life-size and (nearly) fully functional droids that fans of his films have created over the years.

In fact, though, Lucas sees those droids--which were out in force at Celebration V, the huge "Star Wars" fan fest here this week--as a bit of a "tragic" reminder of the struggles he and his team had trying to get their own R2-D2s to work properly back when … Read more

Not long after, Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment put out a press release offering a few more details. According to the … Read more

With kids, the future of 'Star Wars' is rosy

ORLANDO, Fla.--You might think that 33 years after the original "Star Wars" film was released, George Lucas' science-fiction universe might be getting a little long in the tooth.

But if the countless beaming kids at Celebration V, the huge "Star Wars" fan fest being held here, are any indication, the future is very bright for the multibillion-dollar franchise. And it's not just because of the many "Star Wars" video games, books, comics, and toys that have come out in recent years, most of them clearly targeting a young audience.

In fact, when … Read more

You have called your coach out. You have dreamed that you would win. Then you go and beat the Boston Celtics in their own haughty arena in Sunday's Game 7 of the playoffs, a win that means you will now face off with LeBron James.

You are Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic, so whom do you thank?

Traditionally, a player might thank his family, his coach, his teammates, his very special conditioning coach. But, as if to prove just how much the world has changed, Dwight Howard went in a different direction.

Oh, he thanked God. As many … Read more
