NBA 2K11: The one and only (this year)

Looking for a basketball game this season? The choice is simple: NBA2K11. EA has pushed its contender, NBA Elite, to 2011, so your only option for any action this fall comes courtesy of 2K Sports. Though that might make those who like choice a little apprehensive, the good news is that 2K11 has pulled out some extra surprises to turn what was already a really strong game into a classic overall package.

Adding Michael Jordan on the cover seemed like a publicity stunt at first, but the extra challenge modes and authentically re-created vintage playoff games help add something timeless to a game that's destined to be replaced next year. Maybe the idea's pretty smart: collector's features could make certain editions of sports titles worth keeping.

Jeff: 2K Sports has dominated the basketball video game market for years now, so it's no shock that NBA 2K11 is the most realistic basketball game ever made. Though the game's laundry list of tweaks and improvements are all welcome additions, we were floored to see how deeply detailed the game's Michael Jordan mode has been developed.

The amount of painstaking detail that must have gone into crafting the Jordan Challenge mode in NBA 2K11 should not be overlooked. Sure, we've seen sports games opt for a gimmicky add-on before, but the Michael Jordan features in 2K11 are anything but.

Just getting his Royal Airness to even grace the cover is an achievement in itself, but giving the player the chance to participate in 10 of his most legendary games is something any basketball fan--casual or die hard--can instantly relate to. Not only are 10 of his most iconic games represented with astonishing attention to detail, the opposing teams in which he faced are sized up right down to game-accurate plays. Each of the 10 challenges transports the player back in time--complete with uniforms and fashion styles of that specific era.

Jordan himself has been captured with mind-blowing precision, from his casual mannerisms, shooting technique, even down to his iconic tongue that came out during his spectacular slam dunks. The Jordan Challenge is one of the most substantial side quests we've been presented with in a sports game, and something fans of basketball should not miss.

Scott: As for me, I'm not actually a basketball fan at all. Other than attending a few NBA drafts and watching the Lakers three-peat in the late '90s when I lived in Los Angeles, I've lost touch with who's even playing in the NBA, other than the lineup for the Miami Heat. I've treated sports games as my educational tools. I learned a ton about the NFL through Madden over the years. I'm banking on NBA2K11 to do the same for me and hoops.… Read more

Google spends over $250 million on start-ups in quarter

Google spent more than $250 million on a total of 10 acquisitions during the first quarter of the year, putting it on quite a pace for 2010.

Most of the individual companies that Google buys are pretty small, and sell for prices low enough that Google doesn't have to disclose how much it paid because the price isn't material to its business. However, Google revealed the total amount spent in the first quarter as $268 million in its quarterly filing with the SEC Wednesday.

Of those 10 companies purchased by Google over the last three months, specific details … Read more

Google buys Remail, nears On2 deal

Google snapped up Remail on Wednesday, and the first thing it did was to cut Remail's ties with Apple's App Store.

That's a pretty big hint as to what Google has in mind for the technology behind Remail, which developed an e-mail search application for the iPhone. Founder Gabor Cselle announced his decision to rejoin Google, where he worked on Gmail, on his personal blog, saying "reMail's goal was reimagine mobile email, and I'm proud we have built a product that so many users find useful."

Still, that product is going away. It'… Read more

Google sweetens On2 acquisition offer

Google has announced new, more lucrative terms for its desired acquisition of On2 Technologies, a "final offer" intended to sway reluctant On2 shareholders.

In a Dec. 29 regulatory filing, On2 twice postponed a shareholder meeting to consider the offer--0.001 shares of Google Class A common stock for each share of On2 stock--to give itself more time to persuade shareholders of a deal that the video compression technology company wants to conclude. On Thursday, On2 and Google announced that Google would pay an extra 15 cents in cash per share as well.

On2's stock closed at 59 … Read more

On2 Technologies has filed an update with the SEC on its proposed merger with Google, hoping to put to rest some key questions.

On2 agreed on August 5 to be acquired by Google for $106.5 million, a deal already approved by its board of directors. The terms call for each share of On2 to be exchanged for 60 cents worth of Google common stock.

On2 shareholders unhappy with Google deal

Google's acquisition of video-compression software company On2 Technologies is being challenged in court by On2 shareholders dissatisfied by Google's $106.5 million offer.

The lawsuit, which was filed Monday in Delaware Chancery Court, seeks class action status and a permanent injunction against the deal. The suit, first reported by the New York Post, also seeks an accounting of all damages caused by the defendants Google and On2's board of directors.

On2 declined to comment, and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Under the terms of the stock swap, which was announced earlier this month, … Read more

What does Google see in On2's video tech?

So what, exactly, is Google planning to do with On2 Technologies' video software?

The search giant isn't saying. The planned $106.5 million transaction isn't going to make too much of a dent in Google's coffers, but the transaction comes during a hot debate about which future technologies will power Web video. CNET News' Stephen Shankland and Tom Krazit pondered the implications of the deal, and here's what they thought:

Shankland: When I heard about the acquisition, I immediately wondered if the move could tidy up the mess that is that Web video or clutter it … Read more
