Iomega StorCenter ix2 angles for business users

LAS VEGAS--Iomega here at CES today announced the new Iomega StorCenter ix2 Network Storage, which offers up to 6TB of storage space.

This is the upgrade to the previous version of the same server.

Iomega says the new server comes with many advanced business capabilities, including video surveillance capability and support for online storage services, including Mozy, Amazon S3, and EMC Atmos-enabled cloud backup services offered by service providers. On top of that the server itself can also work as a "personal cloud."… Read more

CES: Creative's Tactic3D Omega wireless gaming headset plays with everything

LAS VEGAS--In announcing its new Sound Blaster Tactic3D Omega headset, Creative is touting the wireless gaming headset's versatility, calling it "the first wireless, cross-platform gaming headset to work with the PS3, Xbox 360, Mac, and PC, which is fully integrated."

What does fully integrated mean? Well, the wireless technology is built into the headset itself, so the Tactic3D Omega doesn't require any extra attachments to function with gaming consoles--and PCs--wirelessly (the headphones are powered by a rechargeable battery). However, as you can see from the picture, a powered dongle does have to be plugged into your … Read more

Harvest time in Napa Valley: Low tech, high art

NAPA VALLEY, Calif.--It's 6:45 in the morning, and the crew that's just about to begin working is only picking up from where the overnight team left off.

We're here, deep in some of the most valuable terroir, or vineyard land, on the planet, and for about two days only, it's a race against the clock--actually, the thermometer--to get more than 30 tons of premium grapes off the vines in top condition.

Where I'm standing is in the middle of the Horton block, a 15-acre piece of prime winemaking real estate owned by the … Read more

Olympic timing a high-tech affair

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--Less than a century ago, the timing of downhill skiing required someone at the top and bottom of the run, each with a stopwatch synchronized to the time of day.

Every few skiers, the timer at the top would send down a piece of paper with the start times of the last few skiers and then some math would ensue, eventually resulting in the time of the run being calculated.

Oh, how things have changed. Not only is everything electronic, of course, but the sensors are often tied to the athletes themselves. In speedskating, racers wear a transponder … Read more

More fun than an exercise machine

There is always room on the shelf for one more kitchen appliance. If that appliance has the capability to encourage a healthy lifestyle, then that one extra appliance could be worth its weight in gold. (Or at least worth its weight in terms of shed pounds.) It's not uncommon for people--and I certainly am no exception--to utter promises of getting back into shape, or eating healthier in general. More often than not, these promises fall by the wayside.

The Omega Nutrition Center is a professional style juicer that would look great on any countertop. The "masticating-style" juicer … Read more

Easy-to-use business database

Tracking a number of items--sales, inventory, suppliers, customers, employees, and more--is a snap with this MS Access-based app that's easy to use and master.

Omega Enterprise Manager launches a large window within which a smaller menu window lets you navigate to its many database interfaces and reports. However, even after you install and launch the app the first time, you'll be prompted to download and install a package of Support files, which includes Microsoft Access 2002 Runtime. The program also launches an Internet nag window when you boot it. Once the app is up and running, the design … Read more

Chat consolidator

Omega Messenger offers users a chance to combine different chat programs into one centralized location. While the program works well, some may find that it doesn't cover all their messaging needs.

This free trial has a very simple interface. It mimics many popular chat programs, like AIM or Yahoo Messenger, with a slim, rectangular display and your options along the top. Here you will find buttons to log in, log out, configure, and add contacts. Clicking on log in brings up a drop-down menu with four different chat programs (MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ) that you can open simultaneously. From … Read more

iOmega NAS server gets Bluetooth-friendly

iOmega announced on Wednesday its StorCenter ix2 NAS server. The new storage device is designed for both homes and businesses and is the company's first to support Bluetooth clients.

Unfortunately, the Bluetooth notion only means the NAS server supports certain types of USB Bluetooth dongles that'll cost you another $25 or so. After that, you can send pictures, files, and address book contacts directly from cell phones to the StorCenter ix2 for backup and sharing purposes.

Other than that, the StorCenter ix2 is a two-bay network storage device with its hard drives not intended to be easily replaceable. … Read more

Giant screens are in, spending money on crazy stuff is out

With the U.S. economy in the toilet and the world facing increasingly uncertain times while we select the next president, it's good to know you can still go out and buy an array of 12 24-inch monitors for 13,000 bucks.

On Wednesday, CineMassive announced the OmegaPlex, an "Ultra High Resolution Multimonitor Desktop Display Wall." If you're into world domination, you're probably gonna want one of these. For everyone else, well, that will depend on your salary level and, possibly, your sanity.

For those of you who are interested--you rich, crazy sociopaths you--CineMassive insists … Read more

Hemp speakers--make your own joke

With everything else going green, it should be no surprise that even loudspeakers can be made of some sort of sustainable material. We just didn't think that material would be hemp.

Omega Speaker Systems claims that its "HempCone" drivers offer "improved acoustic properties" superior to paper or plastic, according to Dvice. We'll have to take their word for it (or not), because we don't know what kind of methodology was used to draw those conclusions.
