Future of cooking: The interactive countertop

Forget about the future where we all walk around in silver unitards. How about a future where we dump a bunch of groceries on the counter and the counter tells us what we can make? That's the future kitchen user experience of Oasis, according to Intel Labs, which showed it off at the ninth annual Intel Research Day.

Oasis uses projected displays on everyday household surfaces, like kitchen countertops, to create interactive "islands." The technology lets you interact with an ordinary kitchen counter in a way that feels completely natural and intuitive. It's done by retrofitting … Read more

Pure launches interactive Internet radios for U.S.

Late last year, Pure, a global company based in the U.K., released a family of Internet-connected radios overseas. Now it's bringing them to the U.S. market.

While the company is offering several products, including the Evoke Flow, Sirocco 550, Siesta Flow, and Oasis Flow, it's highlighting the distinctly designed Sensia, which features a 5.7-inch color touch screen and costs around $350.

The company says its digital and Internet-connected range of radios work together with Pure's proprietary radio and media portal, the Pure Lounge, which "enables a two-way flow of information between the radio, … Read more

Desalination start-up gets $10 million

Desalination start-up Oasys Water is banking on the fact that water will shortly be the new oil.

Flagship Ventures, Advanced Technology Ventures, and Draper Fisher Jurvetson seem to agree as the three invested a total of $10 million in Series A funding, according to a Wednesday announcement from Oasys Water.

Oasis, 'Falling Down (Chemical Brothers remix)': Free MP3 of the Day

The question is this: can Liam Gallagher ever be an elder statesman of anything? In an England swamped in punk and new wave variants, Oasis' Britpop now borders on adult--which isn't to say it's stodgy. The group's newest spins the psychedelic style as a textural wonderland.

XACML: A still-emerging standard worth watching

We work in an industry with its own language--acronyms.

A lot of them come and go or are so esoteric that few people in industry even know about them. I'm hopeful that a standard I'm tracking won't fall into one of these buckets. It is called the Extensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML, pronounced zack-mil). This markup language was first ratified by OASIS in 2003. XACML 3.0 is currently in the works.

What's so special about XACML? This standard has the potential to help simplify the mess around two questions:

• Who should have access … Read more

Add Oasis to the list of bands considering music giveaway

These are fearful times for the music industry. As record companies train their considerable legal might on a Minnesota mother accused of illegal downloading, their talent is walking out the back door.

No sooner had Nine Inch Nails announced on Monday that it no longer was under contract to a record label, when word came that Oasis and Jamiroquai are considering whether to release songs online for free, according to British publication, The Telegraph.

Should they decide to go the free route, Oasis and Jamiroquai--two unsigned but very popular bands--would follow Radiohead, the British group that last week announced it … Read more
