NComputing, the virtualization company run by former eMachines CEO Stephen Dukker, is now in the chip game.

The company said Friday that its $20 Numo chip will allow a variety of uses, from TVs that can access the Web to the creation of new kinds of terminals for businesses that can remotely access Windows or Linux.

NComputing already offers its own line of products that let a single PC or server power multiple computing experiences. The approach has gotten some traction, especially in the cash-strapped education space as well as in emerging markets.

Microsoft announced Wednesday that it is ready with Windows MultiPoint Server 2010, a product that lets schools run a classroom full of systems using just a single computer.

Based on Windows Server 2008 R2, Multipoint allows up to 10 different set-ups, each with their own keyboard, mouse, and monitor to run from a single server.

"We heard clearly from our customers in education that to help fulfill the amazing promise of technology in the classroom, they needed access to affordable computing that was easy to manage and use," Microsoft vice president Anthony Salcito said in a statement.

Sharing a computer doesn't have to mean sharing a computer.

Microsoft is working on a new product, due out next year, that will let multiple students work independently and simultaneously off a single PC.

Although each student will have their own mouse, keyboard and screen--and be able to work on their own application--the computation will be done by a single PC running a new version of Microsoft's Windows Server operating system. The new product is being dubbed Windows Multipoint Server 2010.

With the growing demand for virtual desktops and centralized cloud computing, LG Electronics and NComputing announced on Thursday a partnership to make and distribute desktop monitors optimized for virtualization. The new LCD monitors would incorporate NComputing's virtualization products that enable up to 11 people to share a single PC.

Through NComputing's technology, each person has his own keyboard, monitor, mouse, and personal files, but can share common applications and settings stored on the single PC. LG and NComputing expect the new monitors to significantly cut ownership and maintenance costs.

Redwood City start-up NComputing, whose technology uses the power of a single PC to power up to seven computing terminals, is set to announce on Monday that it has started the process of equipping 5,000 schools in India with its technology.

NComputing will provide about 50,000 students with access to the Internet as part of the deal, which will use two PCs in each computer lab to power 10 terminals at schools in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
