Bringing shared computing to the enterprise

SAN FRANCISCO--After years of pitching the developing world and educational institutions on the notion of shared PCs, NComputing is ready to make a more serious push to U.S. businesses.

The company's technology lets a single PC or server provide a desktop computing experience to 10 or more individual thin-client terminals, each hooked up to their own keyboard and mouse and an inexpensive piece of hardware from NComputing, about the size of a home router. By being able to significantly cut costs, the company has racked up a number of large deals in recent years, becoming one of the … Read more

NComputing gets in the chip game

NComputing, the virtualization company run by former eMachines CEO Stephen Dukker, is now in the chip game.

The company said Friday that its $20 Numo chip will allow a variety of uses, from TVs that can access the Web to the creation of new kinds of terminals for businesses that can remotely access Windows or Linux.

NComputing already offers its own line of products that let a single PC or server power multiple computing experiences. The approach has gotten some traction, especially in the cash-strapped education space as well as in emerging markets.

With Numo, device makers can add similar … Read more

New Windows software turns one PC into many

Microsoft announced Wednesday that it is ready with Windows MultiPoint Server 2010, a product that lets schools run a classroom full of systems using just a single computer.

Based on Windows Server 2008 R2, Multipoint allows up to 10 different set-ups, each with their own keyboard, mouse, and monitor to run from a single server.

"We heard clearly from our customers in education that to help fulfill the amazing promise of technology in the classroom, they needed access to affordable computing that was easy to manage and use," Microsoft vice president Anthony Salcito said in a statement.

Microsoft to schools: Share a PC

Sharing a computer doesn't have to mean sharing a computer.

Microsoft is working on a new product, due out next year, that will let multiple students work independently and simultaneously off a single PC.

Although each student will have their own mouse, keyboard and screen--and be able to work on their own application--the computation will be done by a single PC running a new version of Microsoft's Windows Server operating system. The new product is being dubbed Windows Multipoint Server 2010.

"Over the past few years, we at Microsoft have been exploring the area of shared resource … Read more

LG-NComputing promise: 11 users, 1 PC

With the growing demand for virtual desktops and centralized cloud computing, LG Electronics and NComputing announced on Thursday a partnership to make and distribute desktop monitors optimized for virtualization. The new LCD monitors would incorporate NComputing's virtualization products that enable up to 11 people to share a single PC.

Through NComputing's technology, each person has his own keyboard, monitor, mouse, and personal files, but can share common applications and settings stored on the single PC. LG and NComputing expect the new monitors to significantly cut ownership and maintenance costs.

"Our customers are taking into account not just … Read more

Will Poole tapped as NComputing co-chairman

NComputing, the start-up that aims to provide cheap Internet access by allowing one PC or server to be shared by many, is set to announce Tuesday that former Microsoft executive Will Poole will join its board as co-chairman.

Poole, who left Microsoft earlier this year after more than a decade, will share the chairmanship with Stephen Dukker, the eMachines founder who has been NComputing's sole chairman and remains its chief executive.

Through its own virtualization software, the Redwood City, Calif., company allows a single server to serve up to 30 users a PC-like experience--allowing an entire classroom or business … Read more
