Nokia Lumia 800 vs. Nokia N9

One of the first things we noticed about the Nokia Lumia 800 is that it looks strikingly like the Nokia N9, which runs Nokia's soon-to-be-extinct MeeGo OS.

Indeed, it has a similar unibody polycarbonite shell along with the same curved AMOLED display. But on probing further, we found that the differences between the two go far beyond just operating systems. Here we compare the two devices side by side.… Read more

How a Nokia N9 is born

We've seen how Nokia tests the durability of its phones, but how about putting them together?

With Nokia World almost upon us, the Finnish company has uploaded a YouTube video of the making of its MeeGo-powered N9. The phone's OS may be dead upon arrival, but we're still drooling over the N9's looks since its first unveiling at CommunicAsia 2011 in Singapore.

Watch how the polycarbonate chassis and curved display get assembled in the video below:

Nokia has finally started shipping its flagship N9 smartphone. But customers in the U.S. won't be able to get their hands on the device.

The Nokia N9 comes with a curved design and 3.9-inch AMOLED display. The device comes in three colors--black, cyan, and magenta--and offers storage of 16GB or 64GB. The handset also boasts an 8-megapixel camera and the ability to capture "HD-quality video."

However, it's the operating system that might deserve the most attention. Rather than Symbian or Windows Phone 7, the Nokia N9 ships with MeeGo. That operating system, which is … Read more

Nokia will not be launching its anticipated N9 smartphone in the U.S., a new report from Engadget claims.

"After the very positive reception to the launch of the Nokia N9, the product is now being rolled out in countries around the world," Nokia reportedly wrote to Engadget. "At this time we will not be making it available in the U.S."

On Call: Lost iPhones, unlimited data plans, and Nokia's device strategy

On Call runs every two weeks, alternating between answering reader questions and discussing hot topics in the cell phone world.

It's been a few months since I've used On Call to answer reader questions, but this week offered the perfect opportunity. Being that tomorrow, June 29, is the fourth birthday of the original iPhone, I wanted to tackle a great query on replacing a lost Apple device. Plus, the ongoing AT&T-T-Mobile merger has produced a lot of reader questions on the status of unlimited data plans, and the recent introduction of the Nokia N9 has cause … Read more

Nokia's new N9 MeeGo phone (hands-on)

Finnish mobile giant Nokia introduced its latest smartphone, the Nokia N9, today. We at Crave Asia managed to try the new MeeGo smartphone at the Nokia booth at CommunicAsia in Singapore. Here are our early impressions of this sleek-looking mobile.

Weighing just about 4.7 ounces and measuring less than half an inch, the N9 comes in either a 16GB or 64GB configuration. The phone feels great in our hands, and the curved 3.9-inch Corning Gorilla glass AMOLED screen looks fantastic. The display runs at a 16:9 FWVGA (854x480 pixels) resolution.

Nokia has also clarified that the polycarbonate used for the N9's chassis is colored throughout, which means that if there's a scratch, there would be no change in color. The polycarbonate body may seem a little "cheap," but it gives the handset a funky look. The N9 will come in three colors--black, cyan, and magenta. … Read more
