Mazda reveals the refreshed 2013 MX-5 Miata

Mazda has officially pulled the wraps off of the 2013 model year update to its Japanese market Mazda Roadster, known elsewhere in the world as the MX-5 Miata.

The new Roadster gets a revised front end that further evolves the Nagare design language's trademark grin into something both that's more in line with the current generation of the Mazda3, but also less obviously a big happy face. The 2012 Mazda Miata is one of the great bantamweights of the automotive industry, but even it has gained more than a few extra pounds over the years.

If reports from British car publication What Car? are to be believed, it would seem that the right folks at Mazda's R&D department have taken notice.

LAS VEGAS--If I told you that a performance car manufacturer has developed a lightweight version of a popular roadster with a tent-style fabric roof, dubbed "Spyder," you might assume that I'm months late with my Porsche news.

Consumer Reports rate some Japanese used cars as 'more reliable'

In the market for a used car? Here's some good news. Consumer Reports today released its list of used cars that rate as more reliable than their brand-new counterparts.

The Consumer Reports' Annual Auto issue lists 11 2008 models with about the same or even fewer problems than comparable 2010 models. That list includes the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser and Yaris with a reported 11 and 12 problems per 100 vehicles, respectively. Mazda has announced that it will debut a superlight show car version of its MX-5 as part of an ongoing celebration of the roadster's 20th anniversary. So, how do you make the bantamweight Mazda MX-5 lighter? As it is, the roadster is already so spartan that there's not much to hack off of it.

Even smaller Mazda roadster rumored

Model year bloat is an inevitability. Automotive models get bigger with each passing iteration. Even the bantam-weight Mazda MX-5 Miata is not immune and has grown substantially in the 20 years that it's been in production. Auto Express News thinks that Mazda is working on a smaller MX-2 roadster to slot beneath the growing MX-5 roadster.
