Android keyboard Kalq quicker than Qwerty, scientists say

It's hard to type fast and not make any spellibg msitakes, but scientists reckon they've solved that with a new keyboard for Android tablets. Kalq is a keyboard calculated to have you typing 34 percent faster.

Developed by keyboard heroes at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the University of Montana, and the University of St. Andrews, Kalq -- named, like the standard Qwerty keyboard, for one of the rows of letters -- splits the keyboard in two so you can quickly type with your thumbs. … Read more

Montana's delightful 'F-This Job' Facebook post

There are days when most of us think: "F*** this job."

There are days when most of us even say or write: "F*** this job."

Fewer, though, are the days when we post "F*** this job" on our proud state's tourism Facebook page.

However, a social media manager working on behalf of the mountainous state of Montana managed to express her personal frustrations to all the state's fans.

Adweek swears that she wrote:

F this job. I just want to live in Whitefish with my future husband. Leaving Bozeman for good tomorrow. … Read more

Miley Cyrus: Twitter should be banned

Miley Cyrus is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest and most important musical artists.

So when she recently decided to leave Twitter and rapped on YouTube about it, one imagined that investors in the supposedly billion-dollar company shivered uncontrollably for several days.

As did some who watched the haunting performance in her rap video.

However, now the teeny singer has gone further. She believes that Twitter should be banished from our firmament. And I mean firmament.

You see, in an interview with the B96 radio show in Chicago, embedded for your pleasure, the pop divette declared: "Twitter should … Read more

OMG! Miley Cyrus quits Twitter via YouTube!

There are those moments in the business cycle of a young dynamic brand when people look back and say: "If only that hadn't happened."

And so it is with Twitter. And so it is with Miley Cyrus.

You see Miley, she who is sometimes Hannah Montana, was rapidly becoming one of Twitter's most trusted Swiss Guards. She had almost 2 million followers.

Now the sheep have lost their shepherdess. For Miley Cyrus has silenced her tweets, starved her Twitter feed, and drifted off into the uncertain socially not-working darkness from which some stars never return.

This … Read more

Basic Hannah Montanta screensaver

Hannah Montana Screen saver is a collection of Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus photos. While it's not the best screensaver we've ever seen, it does include some options for customization, and fans of the show should be happy with it.

The program features numerous photos of Miley Cyrus both in and out of character as Hannah Montana. A lot of the photos aren't quite high enough resolution for this application and appear a bit pixelated, but overall the quality of the photos isn't bad. The screensaver includes a multitude of different effects for changing the images, … Read more

Wrapping up Road Trip 2009

After more than five weeks and 5,765 miles of driving through Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and very, very small parts of Arizona and Nevada, Road Trip 2009 is over.

This was the fourth year I've done this project, and I've now covered a fourth major region of the United States. In 2006, it was the Pacific Northwest; in 2007, the Southwest; in 2008, the deep South; and this year, it was the Rocky Mountain region. All told, my CNET Road Trips have taken me through 21 states and have covered 18,618 miles. And while there … Read more

Where it's easier to get good vanity license plates

CASPER, Wyo.--I come from California. In California there are almost 37 million people. We have several cities with more people than some states. So when it comes to things like getting vanity license plates, you've got a lot of competition if you want something good.

But over the last few years, I've been to a lot of states with far smaller populations. Idaho, for example, has 1.5 million people. Nevada, where I've spent more time than any other state besides California, has just 2.6 million. And Wyoming, where I am right now, has just … Read more

How mining nearly killed the 'richest hill on Earth'

BUTTE, Mont.--When you visit a town whose current (though not historical) claim to fame is hosting one of America's biggest Superfund sites, it's hard to know what you're going to experience when you get there.

But when I was planning Road Trip 2009 and discovered that this Continental Divide city had once been known as the "richest hill on Earth" due to monumental mining wealth, but was now a city trying desperately to recover from the poisons the mining left behind, I knew I had to check it out.

Instantly, upon reaching the historic … Read more

Road Trip 2009 hits 4,000 miles in Glacier National Park

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK, Mont.--I'm kind of awestruck. For four years I've been doing CNET Road Trip projects, and every time I've hit a new thousand-mile milestone, I've stopped, photographed the odometer and the surroundings, and then blogged about the spot.

In almost every case, that new set of zeroes on the odometer has come at some nondescript location. There have been a couple cases where it happened near something incredible, but I'll be honest: I've cheated a little bit and, say, driven back and forth across a parking lot to have the milestone … Read more

Climate change taking toll on Glacier National Park

Note: All information in this story, unless otherwise noted, is from the National Park Service's pamphlets on and in-park signs about climate change and Glacier National Park.

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK, Mont.--The small graphics on a single sign, deep inside this incredible natural treasure says just about all you need to know about the drastic effects of rapid and intense climate change on the park and what's inside it.

"With warmer temperatures and changes to the water cycle, Glacier National Park will be glacier-free by 2030," the sign reads. "These changes will also have consequences … Read more
