Find that song

Gone are the days when this excellent music discovery app was a free experiment. Yet SoundHound's, formerly called Midomi, philosophy and core functionality remain unchanged. SoundHound returns song titles and artist information when you sing, hum, speak, type, or play a request into a stylish, interface. While the input quality may vary depending on ambient noise, our tests were fairly accurate, and typing usually prevailed in the rare case that singing or holding the iPhone up to a speaker failed.

There are music videos to watch, when available from YouTube, and song lyrics, either delivered right to you, or … Read more

Midomi 3.0 seeks song lyrics, knows what's hot

Fans of Midomi, the song-identifying app for iPhone, will still recognize the app when the iPhone prompts an update to version 3.0, even if they don't recognize the new name: SoundHound. The app's core remains the same with its outsize orange button you tap to sing, hum, or record a song you want to ID, buttressed by another button for shier folk to speak the artist or song name, and a text field for old-fashioned typing. What's new is big, and it centers on two additional tabs below, one that lets you browse music trends and … Read more

Find that song

Gone are the days when this excellent music discovery app was a free experiment. Yet Midomi's philosophy and core functionality remains unchanged. Like Shazam, Midomi returns song titles and artist information when you sing, hum, speak, type, or play a request into a stylish, redesigned interface. The four input types give you the freedom to dictate your search style (you'll never catch us crooning). While the input quality may vary depending on ambient noise, our tests were fairly accurate, and typing usually prevailed in the rare case that singing or holding the iPhone up to a speaker failed.… Read more

Midomi music search gets funding and opportunities

Larry Marcus, from the VC firm Walden Venture Capital, has previously put money in music companies Pandora and Snocap. He came by recently to talk about his latest music investment, Melodis. Melodis makes a cool service called Midomi that recognizes music it hears (over speakers, or just when you hum it), so you can identify a song you want to know more about, or buy it. (See also: Shazam.)

The business model of Midomi is straightforward and attractive, especially now that there's an iPhone version of it. The free app can sell music tracks and generate revenues from affiliate … Read more

iPhone apps: Testing Shazam's limits - classical music

Instead of trying to scrawl down lyrics, doing a search on Google (only to be lead to some bizarre lyric website repository that may or may not work, all the while offering me free ringtones and ceaseless pop-up ads), with Shazam's app, I've actually found songs by, well, listening to them. Shazam is slick. You hear a song, start the app, hold your iPhone's mic up to the sound source and viola! It's been 'tagged' and identified like a wild bird you caught on Animal Planet. Another app by Midomi even lets you hum a tune … Read more

Can't get a song out of your head and don't know what it's called? There are two good applications for iPhone that will fetch song titles and artists when curiosity begins to gnaw.

When or if you're ready to buy, the application also integrates with the iTunes music store, which will gladly bill your account for the song.… Read more

Sing for search results with iPhone app

Singing into an iPhone may garner some strange looks, but an application by Midomi encourages users to croon, hum, speak into their device. In return they will get the song title, name, and a link to buy the mp3 from iTunes. The service also works with SMS.

Midomi names the tune [with video]

In December, I covered Nayio's Humming Search, which is supposed to identify songs when you hum into your computer's microphone. It was a colossal letdown. But a few days ago I tried a new song identifier, Midomi [see News.com story], and it worked great. I tried several songs (including the acid test, "Yellow Submarine," that Nayio flunked), and Midomi named most of them just fine. It didn't hit 100 percent accuracy--during my video shoot, it misidentified Oasis's "Wonderwall" on one try out of about seven--but it's accurate enough to be … Read more
