First complete 'bionic man' unveiled in U.K.

He's got blood flowing through him, but he sure isn't human. Meet Rex, the world's first complete "bionic man."

Rex has the face of a man; prosthetic limbs; a functional artificial blood-circulatory system; and artificial organs including a pancreas, kidney, spleen, and trachea. At 6.5-feet tall, Rex is valued at a whopping $1 million.

Created for the TV documentary series "How to Build a Bionic Man," Rex was constructed by a team of roboticists. The researchers say they wanted to test scientific boundaries and demonstrate how modern science is beginning to catch up with sci-fi in the race to replace body parts with man-made alternatives. … Read more

AOL CEO Tim Armstrong: 'We haven't won yet'

SAN FRANCISCO--AOL CEO Tim Armstrong said he's happy with his oft-troubled company's progress -- including a tripling of its stock over the last year -- but said there's much more to do. "We haven't won yet," Armstrong said.

Speaking on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt not long after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg gave his first live interview since the social networking giant's May IPO -- an event owned by AOL -- Armstrong told interviewer Michael Arrington that the company's comeback has been fueled by three main things: better internal operations; a focus on … Read more

Marissa Mayer: The bio that made her Yahoo's next CEO

Beyond the two company co-founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, perhaps no other executive better symbolized the new breed of brilliant young technologist in charge at Google than Marissa Mayer.

By any measure, Mayer, appointed this afternoon as Yahoo's new chief executive, boasts one of Silicon Valley's stellar resumes.

The first female engineer and 20th employee overall hired by the then-upstart search company, Mayer rapidly distinguished herself at Google, which she joined after graduating from Stanford University with a masters degree in computer science, specializing in artificial intelligence.

Both as the executive in charge of search products and … Read more

Hulu racks up four more original shows

Hulu keeps scoring new original TV shows. With three already under its belt, the streaming service announced today that it will be adding four more original shows that will include some big name actors, according to TechCrunch.

The new shows come at the same that the streaming service is announcing that Hulu Plus has now hit 2 millions subscribers, according to TechCrunch. It had about 1.5 million subscribers in January, so that means that it has added a half-million people in the last four months.

The new shows -- "We Got Next," "The Awesomes," "… Read more

SNL's Seth Meyers pours cold water on Kindle Fire

I know that many people are feeling very passionate about Amazon's new Kindle Fire.

It provides a wonderful alternative to the iPad, the Apple store, and the need to show off your latest gadget to your lover over a candlelit dinner.

So I am grateful to AllThingsD for having sat up late last night to watch "Saturday Night Live." There, the collected wits decided to expose one slight chink in the Fire's fanning flames: its potential lack of cachet.

So here we have Seth Meyers bringing us the latest news.

At the 45-second mark of the … Read more

Report: AMD's Meyer fired over failure to target mobile devices

AMD's former CEO Dirk Meyer reportedly lost his job over his failure to carve out a niche for the chipmaker in the growing mobile market.

Citing people familiar with the matter, a story in today's Wall Street Journal (subscription required) said that AMD's board had been concerned for the past year over Meyer's seeming lack of motivation and interest in expanding the company's reach into mobile devices. Following a meeting in November, the board grew more impatient, eventually forcing Meyer to resign on Monday.

The Journal was unable to reach Meyer for comment yesterday.

Meyer axed as AMD's chip strategy founders

Advanced Micro Devices' chip strategy over the past several years had some flaws that if not fatal, at least cast doubt on how the chipmaker would fare in a quickly changing competitive landscape.

Though no one outside of AMD's board may ever fully know why CEO Dirk Meyer was fired today, there were important markets the chipmaker had essentially abdicated. The most salient being tablets and high-end smartphones.

In 2008, AMD appeared well situated to make a foray into smartphones and later tablets (and seemed ahead of Intel and Nvidia in this market segment). But AMD sold that technology, … Read more

AMD CEO resigns; search on for new leader

AMD CEO Dirk Meyer will step down after reaching an agreement with the company's board over his departure, AMD said today.

Thomas Siefert, AMD's CFO, will fill Meyer's spot on a temporary basis as the company searches for a new CEO. It doesn't sound like the decision was entirely Meyer's.

"...the board believes we have the opportunity to create increased shareholder value over time. This will require the company to have significant growth, establish market leadership and generate superior financial returns. We believe a change in leadership at this time will accelerate the company'… Read more

'SNL' mocks the iPhone

The more Verizon and AT&T trade unseasonal greetings over their respective 3G networks, the more collateral damage seems to be inflicted on the iPhone. Yes, Verizon has itself made jokes about the iPhone being a "misfit toy". However, on Saturday, Seth Meyers of "Saturday Night Live" dedicated 16 seconds of his Weekend Update to a joke about, yes, truly, the iPhone.

Here is the precise text: "It was reported this week that Google would soon launch its own cell phone as a challenge to the iPhone. Also a challenge to the iPhone? Making … Read more

AMD: Our claims about Intel have been 'ratified'

Advanced Micro Devices CEO Dirk Meyer on Wednesday addressed the latest antitrust lawsuit filed against Intel, saying his company's claims about Intel's alleged illegal behavior have been "ratified" worldwide.

"We've said for a long time that our success in the marketplace was hampered by anticompetitive behavior on the part of our competitor [Intel]," Meyer said. "And I think it's clear over the last 12 months that we've seen our statements be ratified...by regulators around the world. We've seen action in the EU take place this year. And just … Read more
