Coke/Mentos-fueled rocket car hits NY streets

Forget electric cars: could the car of the future be one fueled by Coke and Mentos candies?

The idea is the brainchild of Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz, founders of EepyBird.com. They're the same two guys who became an Internet sensation after creating some incredible Coke and Mentos geysers a few years back.

And on CBS' "The Early Show" Wednesday, they made their latest venture a reality, firing up a vehicle fueled by Coke Zero and Mentos on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan--with "Early Show" weather anchor and features reporter Dave Price at the helm. … Read more

Sweet ride in Coke and Mentos-powered rocket car

You've surely seen the Diet Coke and Mentos rockets that have been all over the Interwubs for the last couple of years. For those who haven't, a pair of intrepid scienticians demonstrated that dropping Mentos mints into diet cola causes a chemical reaction that shoots the foamy concoction out of the coke bottles in a fountain-like manner.

The same pair, who've been making the rounds at Maker Faires and other DIY events, this week posted this video of a custom tricycle-type vehicle that works along the same principle. It uses a piston drive to harness the power … Read more

Gadgettes 186: The 'what if all our oil leaks into the ocean?' episode (podcast)

With all that oil gushing out of the hole in the Earth, we have to ask ourselves this question. And if this happens, what then? Well, flying cars and pedal powered Porsches, obviously. Even Eli, our special guest, knows that!

First-gen YouTube celebs: Where are they now?

Not long ago they were everyday people: a video game developer, a trial lawyer, a Gap manager, just doing their thing with little in common.

Then YouTube came along, their videos went viral, and they became Web sensations almost overnight.

You know these three prominent examples of the YouTube celebrity class of 2006: Matt Harding, the goofy dancer in the "Where the Hell is Matt?" videos; Stephen Voltz, one of the mad scientists in the "Extreme Diet Coke & Mentos Experiments" video; and Kentucky fashionista William Sledd with his flamboyant, witty, and brutally honest "Ask a Gay Man&… Read more

'Samurai Girl' to help launch new experiment from Diet Coke and Mentos team

Can the team from EepyBird.com, which brought us the " The Extreme Diet Coke & Mentos Experiments," duplicate their success with Post-it notes?

Stephen Voltz and Fritz Grobe, are the performance artists behind EepyBird. The pair will unveil their new "Sticky Note Experiment" Friday at the ComicCon Conference in San Diego.

As an example of how far Web-video fame can take you, the clip of the "Sticky Note Experiment" will debut not on the Web but on cable television. On September 5, the video will appear on ABC Family's Samurai Girl

Eepy Birds rock Maker Faire, fire ants attack

AUSTIN, TEXAS--Who doesn't like watching the chemical reaction that happens when Mentos come in contact with Diet Coke?

Well, I can't prove that everyone in attendance at Maker Faire here Saturday loves the resulting fountains of soda, but several hundred people surely did.

That much was evident by the giant crowd that gathered for the show put on by Stephen Voltz and Fritz Grobe, perhaps better known as Eepy Bird, who clustered 128 Diet Coke bottles and hundreds of Mentos and put on one heck of an exhibition.

The two have now been doing their show all over … Read more
