The 404 683: Where we walked the plank (podcast)

Best. Meetup. EVER! A huge thanks to all The 404 fans that came and hung out last night at The Frying Pan in New York City. We all had a great time drinking and chatting with everyone, and great news: nobody fell off the side of the boat!

There's plenty of pictures already posted on the The 404 Meetup.com page, but we want them all, so click over and share them with us! Thanks again to all the fans as well as the Frying Pan for hooking us up with the $20 wristband deal, but don't worry if you weren't able to attend; this was so much fun that we're already planning another one for next year!

Audiophiliac Steve Guttenberg joins us on today's episode with his usual list of things on his mind grapes, starting with a profile of a headphone amp manufacturer with a ambiguously inappropriate name, and it's spelled S-C-H-I-I-T. It's unclear how the founders came up with the name since it's definitely not their last name, but Steve tells us that the amps are certainly of absolute Schitt-y quality.

Steve also gives us a preview of an upcoming Audiophiliac blog post in honor of the President of the United States himself...Mr. Justin Bieber. Steve is putting together a custom Hi-Fi Sound system for our Commander In Chief but he refuses to tell us specifics except that all the products will be made in America. Check back this weekend for the unveiling!

The 404 681: Where I Google-d all over my TV (podcast)

The convergence of TVs and computers has been promised for decades, but remains largely unknown for most people outside of the tech world. Fortunately, Google aims to change all that with its Internet-connected Google TV Platform.

Google TV promises to let viewers watch video from a variety of sources--so far YouTube, Vevo, HBO, TBS and even our own CNET TV will have apps available. The big broadcast networks like ABC, CBS and NBC are taking a wait-and-see approach. But Google TV promises you even more, with the ability to search and browse the Web, record your favorite TV programs, and even control the whole experience from your cell phone.

Logitech is holding a news conference today for its own Google TV product, the Logitech Revue, and CNET is at there covering all the news as it happens. Check back again next week when Sony launches its own Google-TV powered box on October 12.

Next up on today's show we're calling BS on an image of a public Twitter booth that recently popped up on Russian Livejournal, aka the premiere site for tech news coverage.

America has its own share of Internet kiosks, but we have a hard time imagining the kind of tweet that would require you to drop everything and pay money to send it out...from a park. We could be wrong, though, so send us a photo if you spot a Twitter kiosk in the wild.

This is the second-to-the-last reminder you're going to get about our official Fall 404 Meetup tomorrow, October 7 at the Frying Pan Bar in New York City.

Join us tomorrow from 7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., and an early thanks to the Pan for hooking it up with $15 wristbands good for open beer, well drinks, and wine for the duration of the Meetup!

We'd like to give them an idea of who's coming, so head over to The 404 Meetup page and RSVP for the event (Meetup.com registration required). We'll see you there!

The 404 680: Where you really should be working right now (podcast)

"Bringing a date to a wedding is like taking a deer carcass on a hunting trip." Des Moines from Shane left us one of the best voice mails we've listened to in a while, so thanks for the advice, dude! On today's episode of The 404 Podcast, we're looking at some of the most inappropriate Halloween costumes of all time. Plus, a preview of the upcoming Sonic 4, and a list of catchphrases every 404 fan should use at least once a day!

Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most recognizable titles of all time, right up there with Mario and Tetris. Even an anti-gaming Luddite like myself can appreciate its simple objective: to run as fast as possible while decimating anything that gets in your way. Also, coins.

The next evolution, Sonic 4, is a throwback to the original games but this time with HD gameplay, so look for it in stores for the Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3, and the Xbox 360, and it'll be featured on a future episode of CNET's PreGame as well!

The next story in the daily rundown is a public Twitter booth spotted in Russia, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow because we'd rather talk about the most inappropriate Halloween costumes of all time. Watch Wilson's head explode and follow along as we show off a couple controversial costumes, including the sexy Finding Nemo, the Suicide Bomber children's outfit, the "Shocker," and one other play on word costume that brings Wilson to tears- don't miss this segment!

We spent the first half of yesterday's show talking about the disturbing world of Renaissance faires, and I told a story about a young fan of The 404 who spotted me in attendance but couldn't stay long to talk with his mother in tow.

Well, he actually called us up with a voice mail that illustrates exactly how bad my sense of observation is--sorry dude! Come to our Meetup at The Frying Pan this Thursday, October 7, and I'll buy you a drink! If you're not a member of our Meetup Group, sign up for more details and RSVP if you can make it!

Here are the meetup details.

Austin meetup: Saturday, March 13

Molly, Jason, and I are headed to Austin, Texas, for South by Southwest festival again this year and, of course, we wouldn't miss the chance to have another meetup. This year, the folks at Squarespace were nice enough to offer to set it all up for us.

The 404 323: Where we're nothing but a bunch of no-good yuppies

Whoa! Last night's The 404 and Buzz Out Loud meet-up here in New York City was way better than any of us expected, and you guys, our fans, rock! For our first post-meet-up/hangover episode, we've got comedian and personality Alison Rosen on the show.

Alison was also at the meet-up last night, and she helps Wilson remember what he did. Fortunately, he didn't embarrass himself too much. The Delancey was definitely a cool spot, except someone thought it was a great idea to double book us with a couple of angry musicians, who called us "yuppies." Nerds, yes; yuppies, no. And we almost accidentally beat up a band member of REM.

A little bit of Twitter news here, but for the most part, we spend the show reminiscing about last night. Here are some excellent photos from the festivities, and we go through some pretty funny voice mails from last night.

Most importantly, we talk about Alison's dating life --or lack thereof. It's a total sham. No woman that beautiful should be single. If you feel up to the challenge of dating Ms. Rosen, send us your photo and a reason why you think you could take on Alison. That's the404 [at] cnet [dot] com.

The 404 318: Where we feast on cupcakes and golden oreos

Caroline McCarthy and Tim Geisenheimer join The 404 today, while Jeff pretends to celebrate the Passover with his family. The ace reporter brings in cupcakes made with bacon cream-cheese frosting and beer. Sounds incredibly healthy. Here's the recipe.

On today's show, we cover the news that Yelp is finally letting businesses respond to negative reviews that users write. Did you know that The 404 has a Yelp page? Wilson discovers that you can actually write reviews for almost anything, including homeless people. In the same vein, feel free to write Yelp reviews for your favorite 404 hosts.

In more outrageous news today, PETA is holding an animal protest rally in World of Warcraft. WoW players are slaughtering baby seals in the "Howling Fjord." We think PETA should spend its time trying to stop Tim from killing baby seals on the weekends, rather than virtual seals. Also, a man in Texas got stabbed for farting in the room with his buddies. This happens on a daily basis in Wilson's office. More from Texas: a state legislator says that Asian American names are too confusing. And South of the border, Mexican drug dealers are sending blatant death threats on YouTube.

Thanks for sending in your survival stories. Keep them coming. E-mail them or call us at the usual number. And be sure to RSVP for the upcoming 404 meetup on April 16 next week. Here's the link. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Megan Fox will be there! (Not really, but Natali Del Conte will be.)
