Google feature now links authors to their content

Authors and other content creators will now be able to link their stories to their profile pages on Google and other sites, giving them a better chance of showing up by name in search results.

Through a pilot kicking off yesterday, authors who link their Google profiles to their content can participate in the program. For those who want to join in, Google has put together a Help Center page with steps on how to set up your profile and author pages.

In certain cases, search results can now list your name and photo taken from your Google profile next … Read more

Google adds feature to link content to its author

Google users interested in the work of a particular author or writer should now find it easier to track down that person's articles, stories, and bio.

Starting yesterday, the search giant started supporting a feature in HTML5 that allows Web sites to link content from a particular writer to that writer's bio or other relevant pages.

As one example cited by Google engineer Othar Hansson in a blog posted yesterday, The New York Times could use the special authorship markup tag to link every story by a particular reporter to that reporter's bio page, which could then … Read more

PDF viewer

PDF-XChange Viewer presents users with an alternative to Adobe's Acrobat Reader. With some interesting additions, it's not hard to see this reader gaining some fans over its more popular competition.

The program's interface looks and feels remarkably like Acrobat Reader, but with more command icons along the top. Users who are familiar with viewing PDFs will find this fairly intuitive, but newcomers are advised to experiment with the options and pay attention to the Help file. Viewing PDFs is incredibly simple and should not be a problem for users. The documents look good through the reader and … Read more

Facebook opens up its markup language (sort of)

Facebook on Tuesday announced that it has made the Facebook Markup Language extensible, enabling developers outside of Facebook to create custom tags.

For example, the iLike application developers have provided an iLike tag that shows favorite songs and playlists.

Initially, FBML included only tags that Facebook created. Today, we're excited to announce a new feature called custom tags. With custom tags, any developer can create new FBML tags. Developers can use these tags in their own applications, or they can share their custom tags with the entire Facebook developer community as prebuilt FBML components.

This is a great step … Read more

XACML: A still-emerging standard worth watching

We work in an industry with its own language--acronyms.

A lot of them come and go or are so esoteric that few people in industry even know about them. I'm hopeful that a standard I'm tracking won't fall into one of these buckets. It is called the Extensible Access Control Markup Language (XACML, pronounced zack-mil). This markup language was first ratified by OASIS in 2003. XACML 3.0 is currently in the works.

What's so special about XACML? This standard has the potential to help simplify the mess around two questions:

• Who should have access … Read more

Why stop at just the gold Razr?

When Crave first mentioned the Dolce & Gabbana Razr, its prices were around $300 or $400, which we thought was plenty considering that it was just a plain old Motorola phone underneath a skin of faux gold. Now, we find out, it was only the beginning.

For the true D&G experience, Neiman Marcus is offering the "Luxury Package" for holiday shopping, which includes a metallic gold leather case, a gold Blutooth headset, a pair of earbuds with gold accents and, of course, a gold-and-silver-tone box. All for only $900.

But for the thriftier among us, the … Read more
