We do have to say, though, that this treatment blew us away. It's being played on a sheng at a performance by the Taiwan Philharmonic celebrating the instrument. The sheng is a complex free-reed instrument from China, and it's one of the oldest instruments from the region, dating all the way back to 1100 BCE. It consists of a system of vertical pipes and a mouthpiece. Each pipe has a small hole; when the hole is covered, the reed vibrates, producing a note. … Read more
Super Mario World 9 may bare the Mario name and face, but it feels different from any other Mario game you'll find. A new game for the world's most iconic gaming character isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there are so many excellent Mario ROMs available that you might not have time for this one. Still, if you're a Mario fanatic or just want to play a Mario game in a new way, this is a worthwhile download.
This game features Mario, but we couldn't find any evidence of a similar game ever being released … Read more
Super Mario Kart's plumber-driven vehicle is driving into the lives of children as an actual rideable toy car. The brightly colored cart sports the Mario "M" on the front and the exaggerated design features of its video-game counterpart in Mario Kart 7.
The battery-powered vehicle has forward and reverse, functioning pedals, brakes, and a seat belt to keep your little Mario from flying out of the cart. It also makes sounds from the games. You will have to provide blue overalls and a red hat if you want to achieve the full Mario look.… Read more
Luke Skywalker isn't the only one who knows how to wave around a lightsaber. Link, Princess Peach, Donkey Kong, Toad, Yoshi, and more beloved Nintendo video game characters are transformed as "Star Wars" characters in "Super Smash Wars 2: The Empire Smashes Back" Part 1 and Part 2 by Oklahoma-based animator and director James Farr.
"'Star Wars' and Nintendo are both incredibly dear to my heart and have always had some interesting narrative overlap," Farr told Crave. "Eventually, I knew, somebody would think to do this. And I wanted to be the one to do it first -- and (do it) right."
There's something rather charming in seeing AT-AT walkers driven by Super Stars. Plus, Donkey Kong plays Chewbacca; Yoshi is a tauntaun (that luckily does not die); Pikachu is the patient Yoda; and Sonic the Hedgehog is a suave Lando Calrissian. … Read more
Super Mario Bros 3 has all of the fun, flair, and secrets of the NES game, but has some nasty ads, too. If you know how to avoid them -- or don't mind them hanging around on your phone -- the game rewards you with some serious nostalgic fun. It's just like playing the real game and you don't even have to blow on any cartridges.
This game is a full emulator of the classic NES game that many would say is the greatest of all time. In it, you have to fight through various levels of … Read more
Watching George Takei play a video game is just about as adorable as watching a newborn fawn walk for the first time -- only a lot more entertaining.
The "Star Trek" actor laughs his way through multiple levels of Maro Party 4 on actress Felicia Day's retro-gaming show "Co-Optitude" on Geek and Sundry's YouTube channel.
After Takei had Day as a guest on "Takei's Take," his new YouTube talk show about social media and technology, it was only fitting that he co-star on the YouTube show that Day normally co-hosts with her brother Ryon Day. … Read more
In the midst of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 debuting and throwing their muscle around, Nintendo is like the kid in the corner: quiet, patient, unnoticed. While the Nintendo 3DS might have found some staying power, the Wii U remains a problem console. Make more games like Super Mario 3D World, however, and that might not be the case.
Nintendo's latest game featuring its tentpole franchise mascot lives up to the reputation, and is a heck of a lot of fun. In fact, it might be my favorite game of the fall, even surrounded by the PS4 … Read more
Video games have evolved over the years from the early arcade styles to cutscenes fit for the big screen. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the opening title sequences of games. In just over two minutes, you can experience the entire history of game title design and marvel at the changes.
This super-cut of title sequences spans 35 games starting with Donkey Kong in 1981 and ending with The Last of Us from this year. It was created by editor Ian Albinson from Art of the Title as a companion piece to a Gamercamp presentation on how cinema has influenced the creation of gaming titles.… Read more
Super Mario Bros 2 plays just like you would expect it to, but it's loaded with ads that try to take over your mobile device. They'll hit you when you open the game and try to inject ads into your browser and search bar; but if you're clever you can avoid them and enjoy a fun emulator. If ads don't daunt you, you should definitely try this game.
An emulator of the classic game originally made for the NES, Super Mario Bros 2, features exactly the same levels, music, and graphics as the classic. Not everything … Read more
