YouTube film 'Life in a Day' coming to theaters

One year ago, famous filmmakers asked YouTube viewers to upload a video reflecting a day in their lives. According to the filmmakers, people from all over the world uploaded a cumulative 80,000 videos, with 4,500 hours of footage.

The result of their edited efforts is the 90-minute documentary "Life in a Day." It's been described as "a historic cinematic experiment to create a documentary film about a single day on Earth."

Presented by YouTube and National Geographic, the film was made by a mighty duo of producer Ridley Scott and director Kevin Macdonald. … Read more

Google green-lights crowdsourced film project

Sometimes Google takes a break from its mission of organizing all the world's information and decides to embark upon an artsy project that encapsulates...organizing all the world's information.

Late on Tuesday, the search giant posted an entry to the Official Google Blog announcing the creation of "Life In A Day," a film project that solicits video submissions from YouTube users around the world--the criteria is that they must capture some kind of moment filmed on July 24.

It's legit. "Touching The Void" director Kevin Macdonald will edit "the most compelling footage&… Read more

Help kids learn about animals

Peekaboo Barn is a farm-themed educational game designed for toddlers, from which kids can learn about animal sounds and names. Fittingly for this age group, Peekaboo Barn has a very simple and satisfying schtick: a red barn bounces up and down gently as you hear a muffled animal noise. You tap the barn to open its doors, revealing the now-louder animal. Its name appears, and is also spoken aloud (charmingly, by a fellow toddler in English, or by an adult in Spanish mode).

The game cycles through 10 different farm animals in this way--everything from a cat to a cow … Read more

How Microsoft's Bing came to be

After leaving Microsoft in 2001, Brian MacDonald found it tough to find his second act. He was involved with a few start-ups and arranged some real estate deals in the Seattle area. He even built a boat in China.

But none really offered the challenge he was seeking. So, when he had a meeting in February 2007 with Microsoft search boss Satya Nadella, he was inspired. That night, he went home and cranked out a 10-page paper on the challenges and opportunities he saw for Microsoft in search. It was in Nadella's in-box the next morning.

"I just … Read more

'Red Paperclip' house up for bids

Two years ago, Kyle MacDonald acquired a house through a series of Web-chronicled trades that began with a red paper clip. Now he's ready to trade it away.

The asking price for the modest two-story house, located in Kipling, Saskatchewan? Nothing in particular, MacDonald says--just make it interesting.

"I'm looking for someone with an idea, something that would benefit the community," MacDonald told CNET News.com over the phone. Really, he says, it's about "finding the right person to trade with. I'm interested in the experience more than material gain."

He does … Read more

Phone rings in designer's new season

The phone may not be terribly new but, if you live in the U.K., you can certainly get it with a colorful new look.

Sony Ericsson's K510i has the same specs as always, but its exterior has gotten a major makeover from hot British designer Julien Macdonald that looks downright psychedelic compared with the original in basic black. And if you get one of these from Orange, you'll be right on time.

MacDonald himself was quoted on Tech Digest thusly: "The print was inspired by exotic flowers, orchids in particular, so thought it would be perfect … Read more
