Verizon's LG Lucid 2 is great for first-time Android users

Despite its rather dull design, the LG Lucid 2 from Verizon is a reliable 4G LTE device that performs consistently well and is available for free with a contract. Aimed at first-time smartphone users, this handset includes a number of features that may just spoil any Android neophyte from here on in.

Sporting Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, wireless charging capabilities (if you buy a separate $30 battery door and a charging pad), and a dual-core processor, the Lucid 2 offers a bit more than the original LG Lucid. Namely, a bump in battery power (from 1,700mAh to … Read more

Verizon may offer LG Optimus F5 as Lucid 2

Verizon Wireless may be the first U.S. carrier to offer one of LG's brand-spankin'-new Optimus F5 Android smarphones.

According to a set of alleged press photos obtained by UnwiredView, Verizon will carry the Optimus F5 as a followup to the LG Lucid. Introduced just last week at Mobile World Congress, the LG Optimus F5 features a 4.3-inch qHD display, a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB RAM, and 8GB internal storage. The handset, powered by Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, will likely be priced low to attract new smartphone buyers.

Remee Lucid Dreaming Mask flashes before your eyes

The Remee Lucid Dreaming Mask is worn like a regular sleep mask, but it has built-in LEDs that flash in patterns. The idea is that the sleeper recognizes the lights as visual anomalies, realizes he is sleeping, and then takes control of the dream.

The LED patterns and delay times before the lights trigger will be customizable through a Web site. There's also a dimmer control so the LEDs don't wake you up by blaring through your eyelids.

Remee isn't the first lucid dreaming mask, but it's cheaper than existing options like the $190 REM-Dreamer. Remee … Read more

Google News spammer has new site, same trick

It didn't take very long for 70 Holdings--and a similar site tied to a Los Angeles-based search-engine optimization company--to start spamming Google News again.

Last week, after CNET pointed out that a company called 70 Holdings Inc. was spamming Google News under the moniker of Red Label News, Google pulled that content from its site. However, over the weekend 70 Holdings popped back up using one of the 44 domains it owns to once again flood Google News with the same type of nearly empty stories tied to search-friendly keywords and advertising.

Brooke Crothers, our chip correspondent, spotted a … Read more

The 404 593: Where we're living the hypnagogic dream with The Sleep Doctor (podcast)

The Sleep Doctor, Dr. Michael Breus, is back and we're ready to bombard him with our pressing questions about sleep apnea, lucid dreaming, snoring, sleep positions, sleep talking, morning breath, sleep aids, night terrors, bruxism, and more!

We kick off the discussion with the good doctor about the dangers of using a laptop or an iPad just before going to bed. Dr. Breus tells us those devices emit light similar to what you'd see on a computer or television screen, which can disrupt the body's ability to secrete melatonin, thus preventing a good night's sleep.

Lucid Lynx paves way for Ubuntu shake-up

Canonical has published the release candidate for Ubuntu 10.04--code-named Lucid Lynx--which offers a new look, better integration with cloud infrastructure, and features designed to be more consumer-friendly.

The release on Thursday came two weeks after the beta was made available for public testing. The OS update is now more or less complete, Canonical said. "We consider this release candidate to be complete, stable and suitable for testing by any user," Ubuntu release manager Steve Langasek said in a statement.

The release leaves Canonical free to aim for more radical changes with the Ubuntu version scheduled for completion … Read more

We have a very special guest this week, Mr. Jeff Sparkman. Jeff gained notoriety previously by being named CNET's nerdiest employee. Soon after, it was a fast life of drugs, women, and comic books. We discuss at least one of those subjects with him.

Tech this week, we take a look at Lucid's soon-to-be-released tech. Also, Dong schools us on using Windows Media … Read more

ATI and Nvidia cards in one system: Lucid demo Hydra 200

Last year I reported on the Lucid Hydra 100. For details on what Hydra is and how it works, check that post.

This week Lucid is announcing an upgraded solution, the Hydra 200. Hydra allows two video cards to simultaneously be used in a single system.

Before clicking the Back button, yes I know Nvidia and ATI have been doing this for years with their SLI and Crossfire solutions, respectively.

The twist here is that the Lucid technology will allow you to mix and match both ATI and Nvidia cards. According to Lucid, you'll even be able to use … Read more
