I have a new favorite artist: bacteria. Imprinted onto cell phones, it can look like flowers, or even distant galaxies. Some types of it can rotate in ways that cause light to scatter, creating a visible shimmer.
It can also make you sick, of course. But let's focus on the pretty little light pulses here.
Two London-based artists have taken magnetotactic bacteria, which can orient itself along Earth's magnetic fields, and combined it with electronics and photo manipulation to create real-time "portraits" of anyone who visits their interactive installation. They call their bio-display "Living Mirror," as the cells "form a 'living mirror' within liquid media from live portrait images captured of individuals."
In other words, if you've always wanted to see how you'd look as a glowing cell culture, this if your chance. … Read more
Security System Live Wallpaper simulates a fingerprint scanner on your Android phone: Tap the target to unlock your phone with a realistic fingerprint effect. It uses push ads and has no available settings beyond links to similar wallpapers. It's free, though, so if you're looking for live wallpaper that simulates a fingerprint scanner, it's worth a try. Devices running Android 2.1 or lower can't run Security System Live Wallpaper.
The app's installer advised us that we could access Security System Live Wallpaper's settings under Live Wallpaper in our device's Wallpaper menu, but … Read more
Photo FX Live Wallpaper displays your photos as live wallpaper on your Android device. You can set the opacity, interval, and other effects, and select the order or a random display. Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper offers you an excellently rendered live storm animation, enlivening your Android background screen. It's easy to download and looks nice -- and what's even nicer is that it doesn't require any special permissions during the installation.
Thunderstorm Live Wallpaper installs quickly but doesn't appear in the apps area; to activate it, you must go to the Display Settings. Once you do that, you'll have a nice, new nighttime storm wallpaper featuring angry clouds that move along a black background and look quite realistic. By default, sheets of rain swipe across the screen, … Read more

Microsoft has been an outspoken critic of the National Security Agency's surveillance program, yet it has trailed behind other major tech companies in amping up its Internet encryption practices. However, that could soon change.
The tech giant is looking to overhaul its system for encrypting Internet traffic, according to the Washington Post. Sources familiar with the matter told the newspaper that Microsoft is making the change because it believes the NSA might have breached its global communications systems.
Microsoft's conclusions most likely stem from documents leaked by the former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. In October, the Washington Post … Read more
The futuristic Xbox One lets you change channels with your voice, log in to your account with nothing more than your face, and instantly flip between gaming and live TV, but Microsoft's wunderbox can't stream Netflix without a $60-per-year Xbox Live Gold subscription.
It's a surprising restriction when nearly every other device, from the $35 Chromecast to the $400 PlayStation 4 to a $2,000 TV, doesn't charge for access to Netflix's streaming service -- a service that already carries its own $8 monthly fee.
(Almost) everything's behind the paywall Netflix is the most … Read more
As Xbox players battled each other, uploading videos showcasing conquests and recording trash talking over the past couple of days, some players noticed that they lost their Xbox Live account privileges.
Apparently, Microsoft has cracked down on the use of expletives in its Upload Studio videos.
"Excessive profanity and other Code of Conduct violations will be enforced upon. On Xbox One, we have a more sophisticated system of enforcement," a Microsoft spokesperson told CNET. "As a result, if someone misbehaves on the service, we may only suspend some of their privileges on Xbox Live such … Read more

So what's so unique about this deadbolt? Not very much, actually. Schlage caught up to Yale earlier this year, releasing their own Z-Wave powered touchscreen deadbolt. And Yale's lock doesn't offer next-gen features like one-touch entry, Bluetooth recognition, or NFC compatibility, the way that new smart … Read more
