Back when open source truly was overhyped

Remember 1999? Back then investors were throwing money at anything that moved and, in the case of Linuxcare, they were also throwing money at things that could barely manage a crawl. Open-source vendors VA Linux and Red Hat enjoyed massive IPOs...IPOs that quickly fell back to earth.

Linuxcare never made it that far, opting to pull its IPO, replace its CEO, and fire much of its staff.

Levanta is dead. Just like LinuxCare.

Levanta, a Linux data center automation company that was reborn from the ashes of Linuxcare, has closed its doors.

I wrote about Levanta and LinuxCare for Slashdot back in December 2005. The company never seemed to get its mojo back from the LinuxCare debacle, despite having a pretty cool product.

Former Linuxcare company closes shop

Levanta, a Linux data center automation company that was reborn from the ashes of Linuxcare, has closed its doors.

Levanta, which laid off the bulk of its 20 or so employees on Monday, is now seeking to sell the assets of the company, said a Levanta investor.
