Google likes Like.com, buys visual search team

Google has snapped up Like.com, the start-up announced Friday, as Google puts its product-shopping search strategy on the front burner.

Techcrunch, which reported a deal was in progress earlier in the week, said the official deal could be for as much as $100 million. "We were the first to bring visual search to shopping, the first to build an automated cross-matching system for clothing, and more. AdMob, Like.com land funding rounds

AdMob and reportedly Like.com have managed to go against the grain, landing additional venture funding rounds in sectors that are now under great pressure.

AdMob, which supplies banner advertising to mobile devices, received $15.7 million in a third round of funding led by Sequoia Capital and participation from existing investor Accel Partners, the company said Wednesday.

For AdMob, its funding round is particularly interesting, given it serves the advertising industry, which is currently facing challenging times in the tumultuous economic climate. My company recently added a client for whom Like.com is a direct competitor.

The Web site was much-hyped and reviewed 10 months ago, when it fired up, including being dubbed the "First True Visual Image Search," but little has been made of it since.

If you believe the traffic trend data from Alexa, traffic to Like.com has mirrored interest by the media and blogosphere, having a spike at launch, followed by a marked decline.
