Shortly after a large meteor hit Russia in February, injuring about 1,000 people, President Obama's administration announced that the U.S. would work on asteroid tracking technology to avoid potentially more severe Earth collisions. Process Lasso 6.0.3.4 Review

At Download.com, we've long recommended the excellent Mark Russinovich-created and Microsoft-supplied Process Explorer freeware, which provides scads of info on all of your Windows PC processes and options for managing them. Well, Process Lasso is like the peanut butter for Process Explorer's chocolate. It lets users set default priorities and CPU affinities for specific processes, establish rules for how processes behave, and also create alerts and automatic events for when processes misbehave or use too much memory. The interface is outdated and not beginner friendly, but Process Lasso offers very useful features in a powerful little package.… Read more

Microsoft skips Apple's copy, paste with Bing 'Lasso'

Microsoft is rolling out a new version of its native Bing application for Apple's iPad today that, with a new user gesture, aims to ditch the need to use Apple's built-in copy-and-paste feature.

Dubbed "Lasso," the gesture has users drawing their finger around any word or words on a Web page to start a new search from that selection. That's versus selecting those same words with a tap, drag, and button press using iOS' built-in copy-and-paste tool, or manually typing them into the search box.

In a blog post announcing the new feature, Bing group program manager Tony Chor says that "many searches" begin from pages users are on while browsing the Web, and that this feature eases that behavior from within the Bing iPad application. The data behind that claim is that users can save up to nine steps with Lasso compared with having to use Apple's copy-and-paste method, Chor said. … Read more

RedLasso has suspended access to its video search-and-clipping site two days after NBC Universal and Fox filed a copyright suit against the company.

File this one under inevitable.

RedLasso, which announced the closure in a statement on Friday, recorded TV shows and then indexed clips so users could find, pull, and embed them on other Web sites. They did so without permission. The company had suggested that it was in talks to obtain licenses. RedLasso will keep operating its Radio To Web service, which allows radio stations to search and upload their content to their own Web site.

Anton Chuvakin, Chief Logging Evangelist for LogLogic, gave me a call today. LogLogic is funded by Sequoia and does log management and intelligence.
