Baby, it's cold outside, but it's much warmer now than when I talked to "The Exes" star David Alan Basche, best known for playing uptight, neurotic Stuart Gardner for the last three seasons of the hit TV Land series. It was a frigid 3 degrees (according to Basche's Weather Channel app) when he called from New York, where he lives with his wife and daughter. We talked about his favorite apps, how he's similar to his TV character, how his Shakespearean training helps on the TV Land set, and the important lesson he learned … Read more
2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 It came, we saw, and it conquered. The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 shows forward thinking in every aspect of its being, and highlights the kind of technical advancement that gave the world adaptive cruise control. The new S-Class is everything Mercedes-Benz needed it to be to stay at the forefront of luxury sedans, but what really swayed us was its near-self-driving capability. Its advanced adaptive cruise control system works in stop-and-go traffic, and Mercedes-Benz added the new steering-assist system, which can drive the car hands- and feet-free in slow traffic. The rollout of these types of technologies is what will ultimately lead us to fully self-driving cars.
Other technical achievements include a powerful V-8 engine making use of direct injection and turbochargers, a comfortable air suspension, and one of the least annoying idle-stop features extant. The fact that the new S-Class does away with incandescent lighting completely in favor of LEDs is another step forward. A 3G data connection comes built into the car, and Mercedes-Benz has begun to bring well-known apps on board. The Burmester audio system is audiophile-quality, and topping the whole thing off is a built-in aromatherapy system.… Read more
I make no secret of my love for the Range Rover. It's a "do anything" car -- you can take it through a desert or take the vicar to tea in utter comfort. It's not out of place anywhere it goes and looks immaculate covered in filth or shiny clean. It's ace.
Land Rover has been busy making sure the Range Rover is up to snuff on the eco front and has just launched a hybrid version. It offers the performance you usually get from a diesel V-8, but economy that's verging on quite … Read more
Familiarity has bred contempt for most of our technology. You are more likely to curse your smartphone when it's slow than to fall down in wonder every time it lets you update Facebook. However, as I raced the 2014 Range Rover Sport through a series of tight turns, then clawed up a steep dirt hill, I found it easier to assume that magic, instead of some brilliant engineering work, made this SUV so capable.
At the forefront of my mind I knew Land Rover's newest SUV relied on individual air suspension at each wheel, automatically locking differentials, and … Read more
From its big, dirty off-road roots, the modern SUV has evolved to serve a variety of purposes. Sure, there are still got rock-crawling, river-fjording brutes, but this is a category where you'll also find compact and sport crossovers, vehicles that are softer and more luxurious, and a few examples that stretch the boundaries of what can be considered an SUV.
We've rounded up a few of our favorite examples, in no particular order, that span the gamut of modern SUVs and crossovers. Be sure to sound off in the comments section and let us know what's your favorite SUV. … Read more
Here's a bit of XCAR 'how it works' for you. We borrow a car, research it, film it and head on to the next one. So far, so motoring journalism, but while you see the 'star car' in our films, you often don't see our support vehicles.
We've had a few over the last eighteen months: a Citroen C4, a Skoda Fabia, and our beloved ToyARTa Hilux. Before our current steed, a SEAT Leon, we had a gap that needed filling. Enter stage right, the Land Rover Freelander.
Standing small as LR's entry-level vehicle, it's … Read more
The new Range Rover Sport is a difficult followup to a massive success. It's "The Empire Strikes Back." It's "Jaws 2." It's "The Matrix Reloaded." Wait, that one was a bit rubbish. Anyway, the point is that the first Range Rover Sport was a hit; it offered a bit of handling finesse to one of the world's most sought-after brands.
Time, and its habit of continually moving, means the Sport has had to evolve and change for the better. Land Rover has listened to customers, the press, and those with … Read more
The US is on the cusp of major change when it comes to flying in airplanes: no more turning off devices during takeoff and landing.
The Federal Aviation Administration advisory committee said Thursday that it was recommending dropping this age-old rule, according to the Associated Press. The committee said that personal electronic devices, like smartphones, tablets, and e-readers, shouldn't have to be turned off during flights.
This means that when people are playing games, reading a book on their tablets, watching movies, or listening to music after the cabin doors are shut, they'll no longer get chastised by … Read more
It's taken a little over a year for us to deliver 50 episodes. Through half a hundred episodes, we've BlackBerry'd the streets of Barcelona, dropped a boulder on a MacBook Pro, and dueled fitness bands in a high-altitude mud run. Not to mention the dozens of other unboxings, future techs, and road tests that have taken us to the techiest corners of the world. This episode continues our tradition and celebrates our golden anniversary with style.
One relationship is fractured, another is revisited, and another is publicly unveiled. Audiences can expect that and more on tonight's season finale of TV Land's "The Exes," which premieres Wed., Aug. 28 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT.
Download.com caught up with series regular Wayne Knight (who plays jaded homebody Haskell Lutz), best known for playing manic mail carrier, Newman on "Seinfeld," Det. John Correli in "Basic Instinct," and villainous computer network engineer Dennis Nedry in "Jurassic Park," about "The Exes"' season finale, his favorite apps, … Read more
