Cat ladies take over the Australian Christian Lobby domain

If you're going to have a Web presence, sometimes it pays to make sure any domain name associated with the name of your organization is accounted for. The Australian Christian Lobby operates out of the acl.org.au domain name, after moving from australianchristianlobby.org.au. But the australianchristianlobby.org domain has been quietly occupied, seemingly kept in reserve -- until a relaunch on Sunday.

Three Melbourne feminists -- Hilary Bowman-Smart, Genevieve Stewart, and Jessica Alice -- snapped up the domain when it became available, turning it into a website for the group, called Australian Cat Ladies, stating that there has been a case of mistaken identity between the two groups. "Please note, it is very important that you do not confuse "Cat-Holics" with "Catholics," the site reads. … Read more

Astronaut records song from space with Barenaked Ladies

Chris Hadfield may well be the coolest astronaut in the galaxy.

He spends his time hosting Google+ Hangouts; giving tutorials on how to clip one's fingernails while on the International Space Station; tweeting with William Shatner; and playing space guitar. Space guitar is pretty much like regular guitar, except it happens in zero gravity while in orbit above the Earth on-board the ISS.

Hadfield has applied his space guitar skills to a recording session where he played and sang live along with the Barenaked Ladies and a choir. A large screen projected his part over video so everyone was on the same page during the session.… Read more

Bieber squeaks past Gaga with most Twitter followers

Justin Bieber has wowed his way to the top of the Twitter ranks.

The teen singer now has the highest number of followers in the Twittersphere, according to data from Web site Twitter Counter. Wooing 33.38 million fans to follow his every tweet, Bieber has shot past fellow singer Lady Gaga with 33.36 million followers.

Gaga's reign as the queen of Twitter lasted two and a half years, a spokesman for Twitter Counter told Reuters yesterday.

Bieber is also high on the list for the sheer number of tweets posted at 20,545 so far, an average … Read more

Prepare for pink with Efficient Lady's Organizer Free Portable Edition

We tend to be suspicious of anything that claims to be designed specifically for ladies -- not just women, but ladies -- particularly if it's something as seemingly gender-neutral as productivity software. This isn't 1950, and on the whole, women's organizational needs don't tend to differ significantly from men's. Any attempt at making an organizer especially "for ladies" has a high probability of being both ridiculous and insulting. Efficient Lady's Organizer Free Portable Edition confirmed our worst fears. Although it's a perfectly serviceable personal organizer, its feminine touches made us kind … Read more

What Lady Gaga is seeing on Twitter, right now

It's always been easy on Twitter to see someone else's @-replies, simply by doing a search for say, "@LadyGaga."

But what if you wanted to see more than that? What if you wanted to pretend you were the global pop superstar and fashion icon and peek into her Twitter feed to see what all the people she follows were saying?

Until now, there's been no easy way to do that directly through any of Twitter's official apps -- although it's a simple thing to do in a client like TweetDeck. But with the … Read more

The songs remain the same (but louder), say scientists

It isn't true until the numbers say so.

That is the mantra of the modern world.

So I bring you news that the figures have been counted and the declaration has been made by unimpeachable scientists: pop songs are becoming noisier and increasingly homogenized.

Yes, should you wonder, on hearing a Lady Gaga song: "Gosh, haven't I heard that somewhere before?" you might well have, but this time it's accompanied by a few more decibels.

You might be wondering what sort of scientists have taken time out of their busy schedules to put a number … Read more

Soccer fans set tweet-per-second record

In the Twitter world of sports, soccer proves to be king. During the peak of the Champions League match between Barcelona and Chelsea in Barcelona yesterday, 13,684 tweets per second were sent out globally -- setting a Twitter record for tweets during a sporting event.

"The conversation reached its high point immediately following Fernando Torres' late goal, which tied the game and sealed Chelsea's victory in the semi-final," Twitter said in a blog post today.

This means that soccer fans have now beat out football fans on the social network. According to the blog post, the … Read more

Lady Gaga social network is for little monsters' eyes only

Move over Facebook, stand aside Google+: there's a new social juggernaut in town--and it's snarling and holding aloft a bunch of bent fingers.

Lady Gaga, the poker-faced megastar with a penchant for meat dresses and a Twitter following the size of Florida, has launched her own social network, CNN reports.

Called LittleMonsters, Gaga's pet name for her trillions of fans, the site has launched as an invite-only beta--asking fans to submit their e-mail to request an invite and "be among the first to experience a new community only for little monsters."

Bless. We expect Mark Zuckerberg has already signed up to try and get an early sniff at this potentially monstrous competition.
