Kensington brings USB docking stations to OS X

Kensington has just announced driver software for OS X that allows Mac owners with USB 3.0-capable systems to make use of its latest docking stations.

USB 3.0 is the latest iteration of the USB protocol, which at 5Gbps throughput offers a substantial speed boost over USB 2.0, and gives it more options to host high-bandwidth devices, including video adapters for external displays. While video, networking, and audio over USB is nothing new, the greater bandwidth of USB 3.0 allows for more of these options to be lumped together into rather versatile docks such as Kensington's SD3500V docking station.… Read more

Keep your valuables in check with Kensington's Proximo monitoring system

I'm no stranger to losing things. From leaving my bag on a park bench, to sifting through all my coats in the closet just to find the one pocket I last left my keys in, it's common for things to go by the wayside.

To help with this, Kensington's Proximo Proximity Monitoring System provides a way to keep track of valuables via Bluetooth. With its key fob or tag attached to your items, you can monitor and locate your belongings via an iPhone app. Likewise, you can use its key fob to make your handset sound off … Read more

Kensington widget warns when iPhone goes walkabout

Kensington has launched a system called Proximo that it promises will alert people when items like keys and iPhones are lost or stolen.

The Proximo kit consists of an iPhone app, a key fob for a keychain, and a third device to track something else like a backpack or car, the company announced at CES. If the items get too far apart -- people can specify the exact distances, which are measured wirelessly using BlueTooth -- they sound an alarm.

The fobs and app each come with buttons that triggers an audible alarm from a paired device to help locate … Read more

15 must-have iPad cases

The biggest change to our on-the-go computing habits in 2010 has been the introduction of Apple's iPad tablet. While ultraportable and Netbook laptops are still very important, there's a pretty good chance that meetings, day trips, and coffee shop work sessions are now conducted with the help of an iPad instead.

Picking the right case for your iPad is important, and we've gone through dozens to compile this roundup of useful ones. We're still searching for the holy grail of the perfect iPad case, but many of the examples collected here are either solid all-around products … Read more

Kensington ClickSafe: Does anyone lock a laptop?

I remember 1997. I always brought my Kensington cable lock with me to tie down my PowerBook at the grad school library. Honestly, I don't think I've used a laptop lock since.

I'm not alone, apparently. Kensington's new ClickSafe locking system aims to somehow make the process easier. Well, at least half of the process: the new ClickSafe lock automatically snaps onto your laptop without a key, but it still requires a key to unlock--not a surprise, since a lock that could be unlocked without a key doesn't sound very safe at all.

The Kensington … Read more

Kensington KeyFolio Keyboard iPad case: Netbook killer or added baggage?

There are many differentiating factors between an iPad and a Netbook, but none so obvious and useful as a physical keyboard.

We've remarked several times since owning the iPad that the addition of a dedicated Bluetooth keyboard really helps the little slate become a pretty good mobile writing tool. Though a virtual onscreen keyboard does the job fairly well, especially in conjunction with a raised case like Apple's own microfiber one, it's no substitute for the rapid-fire feel of physical keys. I use an Apple Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad, and it's a great combo; the only problem is, even with its small size, carrying yet another gadget around ruins the appeal of the iPad's simplicity.

We've wondered why Bluetooth keyboard cases weren't immediately conceived for the iPad from day one, but six months later we've finally got one that's real. The Kensington KeyFolio is a leather-bound booklike case that bonds a thin silicon-covered Bluetooth keyboard to its inner lid, unfolding to turn an iPad into a veritable mini-workstation. For $99, the KeyFolio is cheaper than the sum total of most keyboards and cases on the market. Is it worth the investment? And more importantly, could a keyboard case turn an iPad into a valid Netbook replacement?… Read more

Kensington iPhone car cradle pumps up the volume

The Kensington Amplified Car Cradle for iPhone isn't the first accessory that boasts to passively amplify audio output of Apple's iPhone, but it may be one of the first designed at in-car navigation use.

The device consists of a rather bulky cradle with a pair of spring-loaded metal arms that hold the iPhone in place over a set of hollow lower arms. The springy arms have enough flex in them to allow the phone to be inserted and removed with one hand and have enough give to accommodate protective skins, but not hard cases.

Its lower arms are … Read more

Kensington sleeve props up your laptop

We all love origami, especially when it's applied to tech toys. Often, a laptop slipcase serves its purpose only in the bag, but Kensington's TwoFold Notebook Stand and Sleeve lets the case prop up your machine.

Besides potentially saving future generations by preventing lap burn, elevating the laptop actually allows for a more comfortable viewing angle and typing experience. Kensington's TwoFold Notebook Stand and Sleeve fits 14.1- to 15.4-inch notebooks and is available now for $39.99.
