Control which Foursquare check-in alerts your iPhone receives

You can now control which Foursquare check-ins will trigger an alert on your iPhone. Previously, you were able only to turn alerts on or off for a particular Foursquare friend, and that's still the case for Android and BB10 users. With the latest update to the Foursquare app, version 5.4.3, you'll be able to assign a contact to one of three different notifications categories: Off, Nearby, Always.

When set to Off you'll never receive an alert for that contact. Nearby will work similarly to the way check-in notifications have in the past, and Always will … Read more

It also lets you build … Read more

How to make your iPhone 5 'dance'

When I first read Rafe Needleman's tweet where he encouraged his iPhone to dance, I shrugged it off. Then I clicked on the cycloramic.com link in the tweet and watched one of the videos posted on the site. I shook my head in disbelief as I watched an iPhone 5 spin in a circle -- hands-free -- while standing on end. I was convinced there had to be some sort of special effects or movie magic going on. Obviously this was a prank. Right?

Boy was I wrong. So I followed the link to the App Store, forked … Read more

Apple iOS will kick in 40 percent of Google's mobile sales, says analyst

Google will have arch-rival Apple to thank for a huge chunk of its mobile revenue in 2012.

The search giant's licensing deals with Apple over its Maps and Search apps have been a healthy cash cow since the iPhone debuted in 2007. This year will be no exception.

In an investors note released yesterday, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said he expects Google to generate around $4.5 billion in mobile sales this year. And iOS will kick in the largest or close to the largest chunk of that.

iOS will account for around 40 percent of Google's … Read more

iPhone apps of the week

I hope everyone had a great holiday! Coming back after the break has been a whirlwind for all of us at CNET. With the one-two punch of Macworld here in San Francisco and the simultaneous Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, we've been working around the clock to bring you the latest news and announcements from both trade shows.

I was lucky enough to walk the show floor at Macworld and although it wasn't as exciting as previous years, there was still plenty of excitement. Some highlights include software launches, third-party hardware, and--of course--Mac, iPod, and iPhone accessories. … Read more

Squishy driving

JellyCar is an inventive and whimsical free game in which you drive a bouncy car through a series of 2-D puzzles on 15 short levels. What makes JellyCar unusual (besides its goofy soundtrack) is the game's "soft-body physics," which make your car and everything in the game world extremely squishy and reactive. The fairly simple controls make great use of the touchscreen--you can drive left and right, temporarily "inflate" the size of your car, tilt your device left and right to rotate the car, and pinch and zoom to change your view of a level. … Read more

Google iPhone App Already Lists Voice Function, but It's Not There

As reported by the New York Times, Google's iPhone application will soon get voice functionality, allowing users to speak a search term, which is then transmitted to Google's servers, recognized (theoretically), then entered as a search term. Geez... is the iPhone's virtual keyboard that bad?

According to the report:

"The sound is converted to a digital file and sent to Google?s servers, which try to determine the words spoken and pass them along to the Google search engine.

"The search results, which may be displayed in just seconds on a fast wireless network, will … Read more

Apple's App Rejections Get Curiouser

Apple's App Store rejections are making less and less sense. The latest victim, Cast Catcher, is a streaming Internet radio application in the same vein as AOL Radio and Pandora--both of which have been available through the App Store almost since its inception.

CastCatcher 1.3 was rejected, according to an Apple statement posted by return7 , because:

"CastCatcher Internet Radio cannot be posted to the App Store because it is transferring excessive volumes of data over the cellular network, which as outlined in the iPhone SDK Agreement section 3.3.15, is prohibited"

This despite the similarity … Read more
