Hubble telescope spots Space Invader in space

Humans have long looked up into space and assigned objects like lions, bears, and hunters to shapes made by the stars. Now the Hubble Space Telescope has looked up into space and discovered an object that looks an awful lot like a classic game creature from Space Invaders.

The image was taken in infrared light by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 and combined with near-infrared observations from Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys.

"The gravitational field surrounding this massive cluster of galaxies, Abell 68, acts as a natural lens in space to brighten and magnify the light coming from very distant background galaxies," the Space Telescope Science Institute says. "Like a funhouse mirror, lensing creates a fantasy landscape of arc-like images and mirror images of background galaxies."… Read more

Play Arcade Games with Space Invaders for Mac

Some games are better off left in the past. Space Invaders for Mac offers a true original-style version of the Space Invaders game. Unfortunately, being true to the original game does not make this game easy to use or great to look at.

Space Invaders for Mac presents an unmodified version of the original Space Invaders game. This game loads as a widget, making it awkward to access. The graphics and overall look of the animation is just as flawed and basic as the original. The interface does not allow for any preference modifications, and no list of keyboard commands … Read more

Luxury watchmaker turns hand toward retro games

A gentleman's timepiece should never be too exuberant, but Crave feels compelled to give a curious nod to the ultra-expensive Pac-Man and Space Invaders watches by Swiss timepiece crafter RJ-Romain Jerome. Each dial features a miniature replica design of the arcade classics set in a pixelated appearance.

Perhaps understated from first glance, these geeky watches (waterproof to 98 feet) with rubber straps contain some real stellar inspirations. For starters, each steel timepiece features real fragments of the Apollo 11 lunar module, and the designer took it a step further by modeling the four joints of the watch after lunar landing module legs. To top off the extravagance, the back of the watches contain low-oxidation silver mixed with real moon rocks, specially patterned like the lunar surface. … Read more

The defender becomes the attacker!

Anomaly Warzone Earth takes a different tack with the tower defense genre by having you play as the invading force, completing missions on a (somewhat) fixed path against a number of deadly turrets. Your heavily armored squad of vehicles and units has guns of its own, but as with every tower defense game, the more turrets you're up against, the harder it will be to stay healthy and reach your goal.

Fortunately, as you progress through the game, you'll gain abilities that will repair your vehicles and make it harder for enemies to hit you. You'll be … Read more

Enjoy Space Invaders on a mini arcade machine

Wish you had the space in your home to house an arcade cabinet? YouTube user "vcoleiro1" might just have the solution. He's built himself a Space Invaders-themed mini arcade console.

This little piece of technology was made using 6mm medium-density fibreboard (MDF) and decorated with graphics from the original arcade machine, which lends an authentic touch. Despite its small size, we wouldn't mind risking finger cramps to enjoy some good old alien blasting on this.

Apart from Space Invaders, this little device will accept almost any Game Boy Advance cartridge. Of course, playing the turn-based Pokemon on this won't exactly have the same effect as playing Tomohiro Nishikado's 1978 classic shooter.

Those interested in buying these little wonders can email their creator at vcoleiro1@gmail.com. Watch the video to see it in action. … Read more

We knew the moon would attack someday

Earth Vs Moon is a fast-paced, well-made, and often funny arcade game that bears a close resemblance to the Atari classic Missile Command, along with quite a few homages to other beloved old-school video games.

The setup is similar to Missile Command: three stationary bases along the bottom of your screen that fire missiles up at incoming targets with a limited ammo supply. Earth Vs Moon makes great use of the touch screen (you tap to target), offering an improvement over the original game's trackball controls and the Atari 2600's joystick. Many of the game's levels play … Read more

The iPhone's best neo-retro game: Space Invaders Infinity Gene

While Taito has already released an iPhone port of the original Space Invaders, we'd recommend you slide past that and buy, instead, a spectacular revamp that launched this week on the App Store by the name of Space Invaders Infinity Gene.

As you'll quickly see from the trailer above and gallery below, this shooter is Space Invaders in spirit and design, but in execution it's a full-fledged arcade onslaught of power-ups, boss battles, and a thumping techno soundtrack that pulses along perfectly. This isn't Taito's first reinvention of Space Invaders: its Space Invaders Extreme was … Read more
