Street View comes to Indianapolis Colts' stadium

And now, a way to explore an NFL stadium without paying the $100 average ticket price: Google Maps today introduced Street View for Lucas Oil Stadium, better known as the home of the Indianapolis Colts.

It is the first U.S. sports venue to get the Street View treatment. Previously, Google created the 360-degree, interactive maps for World Cup stadiums in South Africa.

To bring the Colts' stadium to Google Maps, the Street View team showed up on a day where no sporting events were planned and proceeded to document using two key tools: the proprietary Street View trolley, a … Read more

Desktop search declined for the first time in 2012, report says

Looks like those reports last year suggesting that desktop search is in decline were correct: Total searches dropped 3 percent in 2012, according to a new report from ComScore.

The main reason for the decline, according to the report, is that individuals are searching less: about 7 percent fewer searches per user. That's enough to cause the decline, even though the number of searchers is up 4 percent.

Of the major search engines, only Bing saw an increase in searches per user: 6 percent, ComScore said.

ComScore names two possible reasons for the decline: the move toward vertical search … Read more

Super Bowl XLVI launches free app for game day

The NFL is gearing up for tens of thousands of visitors to descend upon Indianapolis to watch the Super Bowl live this weekend. In order to help fans navigate the city and stadium, the sports federation released a free app yesterday for iOS and Android called Super Bowl XLVI Guide.

The app's features include a detailed guide to local restaurants, nightlife, and official Super Bowl events, a 3D map of Indianapolis, and an interactive 3D map of Lucas Oil Stadium, along with screens to follow different social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. The idea is to put every … Read more

Solar car chases checkered flag at Indy

It's race day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. You can almost feel the rumble of the engines and hear the whine of fine-tuned race cars whipping around the curves. Here they come! A small herd of flat fish pull quietly up to the track. These aren't your usual racers. They are participants in the Formula Sun Grand Prix, part of the American Solar Challenge for solar-powered cars.

The track racing event begins on May 2 and continues through May 7, but I'm standing outside an engineering building in Albuquerque at the send-off for the University of New Mexico team. The fire-engine-red car is swarmed by media members and well-wishers who can't take their eyes off the futuristic-looking design.

It took 15 electrical, computer, and mechanical engineering students about eight months to put this creation together. It's called the Lobo del Sol, which translates to Sun Wolf.

The three-wheel car is powered by an electric motor culled from a scooter. The body is crafted from Nomex, a lightweight material that's also used in race car driver fire suits.

The chassis is all hand-made. Small square solar panels donated by Schott Solar look like they've been sewn onto the surface into a big, high-tech quilt.… Read more

The 404 Podcast 514: Where Justin lost $1,000 in the big game

Wilson might be the only host on The 404 who watched the entire big game Sunday, so we don't spend too much time talking about the actual game and instead stick to the commercials. Ads this year included Google's first Super Bowl ad. Also, HomeAway revitalized the Griswold family from National Lampoon's "Vacation", and Motorola aired a commercial with Megan Fox selling something...we just don't remember what it is.

We also have a story about Comcast changing its name to Xfinity. Starting next week, its cable television, telephone, and Internet services will feature the rebranded name in 11 markets. In what seems like an effort to give a sharper edge to the brand name, the change is taking heavy fire from sites like The Consumerist, which claim that the new Xfinity name has an X-rated/pornographic/stupid/energy drink connotation.

Finally, we run down a list of the 10 most needlessly perverted mainstream games. Follow along as we chat about some of the most revealing games in console history with titles like Dead or Alive, The Sims, and Bayonetta leading the scandal. Oh my. Speaking of which, we hate to be the ones to report it, but Microsoft is no longer offering online support for original Xbox games like Halo 2 and Counterstrike. Bummer!

Jimmie Johnson wins at Martinsville

The past couple of days we've been checking out how NASCAR upstart Jimmie Johnson won this past weekend's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard in Indianapolis. So I figured we'd finish out the week with more spectacular moments from Jimmie Johnson's career.

While his victory at the Brickyard marked Jimmie's third victory of the season, today we take a look at his first win of the 2009 season at the Goody's Fast Relief 500 in Martinsville, VA back in March. This video clip takes a look at the last quarter or so the race while … Read more

2009 Brickyard 400: A Different View

Yesterday I posted a video blog with highlight's from this year's Brickyard 400 that also included the somewhat controversial finish where a rule infraction by then lap leader Juan Pablo Montoya paved the way for Jimmie Johnson to make a run at the top spot and eventually got the win. While doing the search for video footage, I found an alternate video showing a different view of the chain of events that helped Jimmie Johnson pick up the victory in Indianapolis.

Right at the start of this clip you can see Dale Earnhardt Jr's vehicle going up … Read more

Jimmie Johnson Wins Brickyard 400

The Brickyard 400 is usually one of the best events in any NASCAR season. This year proved to be no exception, as a penalty cost the majority lap leader which led to a face off between two cars for an exciting finish.

For most of the race, Juan Pablo Montoya (in the 42 car) was in the clear lead for well over 100 laps. Deep into the race, apparently Dale Earnhardt Jr's vehicle starts smoking and checks into pit row where Montoya was making a final pit stop. Then Montoya gets penalized for going BARELY over the speed limit … Read more

Danica's Big Win

While Sarah Fisher was out and about spreading the word last week about the 93rd Indianapolis 500, another Indy woman has also been attracting a lot of attention--Danica Patrick. While Danica is driving tons of Internet traffic from swimsuit shoots and steamy TV commercials, she has also become a savvy self-marketer and top contender in Indy racing. In fact, at this last weekend's Indianapolis 500, Danica finished third, her best showing at the Indy 500 to date.

If she hadn't before, Danica put the racing world on notice and made history when she won her first Indy race … Read more
