iLife '11 installation DVDs not working

A few people who have purchased retail copies of the latest iLife '11 suite from Apple have complained that the installer will not work. When installing using the DVD, the installer may hang halfway through its progress, or stop with an error stating that the manufacturer (Apple) should be contacted.

A number of people are finding that this appears to be from the media the software is being distributed on. There may be a problem with the drives being able to read certain sectors of the media, at least for a standard installation of the drive.

Apple adds calendars back to iPhoto

For those of you befuddled as to why Apple didn't support calendars in the latest version of iPhoto, wonder no more.

Apple just today sent us a note saying that it has pushed a software update that adds calendars to iPhoto '11. There's no explanation as to why they were missing in the first place, but it's a safe bet that it just wasn't ready when Apple introduced the latest version of the photo software along with iLife '11 and two new versions of the MacBook Air on October 20.

In addition to the calendar option, … Read more

Apple iLife '11 full review is in

There's a lot to like about iLife '11, Apple's just-updated suite of media sharing and editing applications. We got our grubby mitts on it last week, and posted the full review on Friday.

Apple had a long history of releasing a new version of the suite every January for four years, then it was six months late for the '08 version before getting back on track for '09. Apple iLife '11

The bottom line: iLife '11 is a welcome and long-overdue update to Apple's suite of digital media applications. This year's version adds a handful of advanced features to iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand without making them more difficult to use. It's a shame iDVD and iWeb did not receive updates with this year's version, but with a slightly lower price for upgraders than in years past, iLife '11 still represents a good value to consumers looking for a set of tools for editing and sharing media. At $49, and close to two years since the last major … Read more

Apple's FaceTime on Mac OS X, Windows

A French Web site, Mac4Ever, posted a short article claiming the Cupertino computer crafters are creating software for Mac OS X, presumably an update to iChat, that will allow desktop and notebook users to communicate via FaceTime with compatible iOS devices.

The information is not backed up with sources, but the site has been known to have semi-accurate predictions (SD Cards on last year's iMac release, though incorrect in predicting the release of iLife '11 in August of this year). Translated via Google Translate, the site reports that, "it is rumored that Apple is preparing to leave FaceTime … Read more
