Advanced task managers on iOS

There must be hundreds, if not thousands, of to-do-list management apps in the iTunes App Store, but which one should you choose?

I found a couple of new task management apps recently that add something extra to the category. But using them made me realize that an old favorite of mine still stood up to the test of time and remains a great choice for lists and tasks.

It's no secret that many people like to use lists to get through daily projects, but when you have a task manager on your iPhone, you get handy additions like alerts, notifications, and editable tasks when your goals change. Whether you're just making a grocery list or planning a big business project, a good task management app can focus your efforts and keep you on point for success.… Read more

Yet another new Apple campus in the pipeline?

While planning continues ahead of approval and construction of Apple's headquarters reboot, rumor has it that company executives are already considering yet another major campus in its home town of Cupertino, Calif., when this latest project is completed.

In a story about Apple's current campus build effort, the San Jose Mercury News points to a mention by Mayor Gilbert Wong saying that Apple executives told him the company's growth might warrant another building following the completion of campus No. 2:

"And just like a new gadget, the company may not be done upgrading. Wong said Apple … Read more

China hot on Google's heels with driverless car

Google isn't alone on the road to commercialize driverless cars. Researchers at the National University of Defense Technology in China recently debuted an autonomous vehicle of their own that could give the technology giant a run for its money.

In a partnership with China's First Auto Works, university researchers equipped a Hongqi HQ3 sedan with cameras, sensors, and a computer that enables it to start, navigate traffic, and stop without help from a driver. The autonomous vehicle made a 154-mile journey on a busy freeway from the Hunan province's capital of Changsha to Wuhan, the capital of the Hubei province, in 3 hours and 20 minutes.

The driverless Hongqui HQ3 doesn't use GPS technology to figure out where it is or how to get where it's going. Rather, it relies solely on its cameras and sensors to watch for traffic, obey speed limits, and make lane changes. Its computer is capable of making driving decisions in 40 milliseconds compared with the 500 milliseconds a human driver takes, and because the HQ3 can respond more quickly to traffic scenarios, it's theoretically safer. … Read more

Apple leases extra office space ahead of HQ 2.0

Apple is said to have inked a deal on new office space near its existing Cupertino, Calif., headquarters that will house up to 1,300 additional employees.

The deal, which was reported by the Oakland Tribune yesterday, will give Apple 373,000 square feet in the Results Way Corporate Center, located a few minutes away from Apple's main offices.

The extra space is a band-aid while Apple works on approval from the City of Cupertino to begin work on a new campus located across town on 150 acres, some of which was purchased from Hewlett-Packard. When completed, that building … Read more

Atdhe.net moves after Homeland Security seizure

In case you missed it, the other day there was a collective moan from sports fans around the world. The Internet domain name for popular sports video-streaming Web site Atdhe.net was seized by the Department of Homeland Security as part of a larger crackdown on sites that were allegedly infringing on copyright laws.

In advance of Sunday's game, federal officers armed with court-issued warrants also seized the online domains for Channelsurfing.net, HQ-streams.com, HQstreams.net, Firstrow.net, Ilemi.com, Iilemi.com, Iilemii.com, Rojadirecta.org, and Rojadirecta.com.

Thousands of people had come to rely on Atdhe.… Read more

24-inch Acer monitor embeds Nvidia 3D

LAS VEGAS--One of the problems I've had with most 3D monitors released so far is that they seemed to have had their 3D support shoehorned in.

Seemingly, the monitor manufacturer took a normal 60Hz monitor and simply tacked on 3D support--if that could considered a simple process--and did not develop a monitor with 3D in mind from the ground up.

At CES this week, Nvidia and Acer are attempting to change that perception with the Acer GN245HQ.

The GN245HQ is one of the first monitors to embed the 3D Vision Kit's 3D emitter.

Previously, in order to make … Read more

Basic YouTube downloader

YouTube Downloader HQ Pro is a quick and easy way to download videos from YouTube. Although it's not quite as flexible as similar programs we've seen, it's a good choice for a basic YouTube downloader.

The program's interface is simple and intuitive, with absolutely no clutter. Users simply copy and paste the URL of the video into the proper field and select whether they want to save it as an FLV, 3GP, high quality MP4, or high definition MP4 file. Click the Start button and your video is on its way. The program has no Help … Read more

Launching in public beta on Tuesday is ProofHQ, a new entrant to the world of Web collaboration tools. The service is focused mostly on design work, but has been set up to handle nearly every kind of document and illustration format under the sun.

Like Conceptshare, a tool we've raved about in the past, ProofHQ is entirely Web-based, and designed to make collaborating on projects of all magnitudes something that happens outside of your e-mail in-box.

On Monday co-founder and CEO Mat Atkinson took me through the entire process of proofing something among multiple parties. What makes it a … Read more
