For the next 48 hours, Web Hosting Hub is offering your first year of Web hosting for just $10. That's $50 off the usual price.

Update: Sorry, folks, someone forgot to flip the switch: The deal … Read more

Pirate Bay ditches servers and switches to the cloud

In the midst of threats of a possible police raid, the Pirate Bay decided to armor itself and become literally raid-proof. It's ditched its servers and moved to several cloud-hosting providers in different countries around the world.

"Slowly and steadily we are getting rid of our earthly form and ascending into the next stage, the cloud," the Pirate Bay wrote in a blog post. "Our data flows around in thousands of clouds, in deeply encrypted forms, ready to be used when necessary. Earth bound nodes that transform the data are as deeply encrypted and reboot into … Read more

Swedish police raid former Web host for Pirate Bay, Wikileaks

The Swedish police seem to be going straight to the source in their battle against copyright infringement. According to Forbes, the country's authorities raided the Stolckholm-based Web host PRQ, which is known for hosting some of the most popular outlaw sites on the Internet, including the Pirate Bay, Wikileaks, the North America Man-Boy Love Association, Pedophile.se, and the Chechen rebel site Kavkaz Central.

It's unclear why police raided PRQ, but its owner Mikael Viborg told the Swedish news outlet Nyheter24 that he believes the investigation had to do with intellectual property violations, according to TorrentFreak. Viborg also … Read more

Airbnb will cover up to $1 million in damage to homes

After the story of a ransacked home surfaced last year, accommodations marketplace Airbnb has decided to offer hosts security with promises of more money.

Airbnb committed to covering up to $1 million in damage resulting from a booking, up from its $50,000 "Host Guarantee," the company announced today.

It said the host guarantee, backed by Lloyd's of London, is not insurance, and it doesn't cover cash and securities, collectibles, rare artwork, jewelry, pets and personal liability. The company called the move "an unmatched level of protection in the industry."

U.S. says MegaUpload's hosting service is no innocent bystander

ALEXANDRIA, Va.--Managers at Carpathia Hosting should have known their MegaUpload gravy train would roar off the tracks one day, according to a lawyer representing the U.S. government.

Since January, when the U.S. Department of Justice filed criminal copyright charges against MegaUpload, one of the world's most popular cyberlocker services, the private firm that hosted MegaUpload's servers has preserved user data on its own dime. During a hearing yesterday in U.S. District Court to decide what to do with MegaUpload's user data, Carpathia's lawyer told the judge that the federal government should pick … Read more

The torrent-downloading site The Pirate Bay announced last week in a blog post that the Swedish authorities had launched a new criminal investigation into its activities.

The Pirate Bay tosses all torrents

If you go to The Pirate Bay's Web site, you'll now see the words "The Magnet Bay." As of tomorrow, the popular Swedish torrent tracker will no longer be offering users torrent files, but instead will be posting magnet links.

On its blog today, the Pirate Bay wrote that even though this "marks the end of an era," users should not notice much of a difference.

"It shouldn't make much of a difference for the average user. At most it will take a few more seconds before a torrent shows the size … Read more

MegaUpload substitutes show spikes in traffic since shutdown

Despite a major government crackdown on cyberlocker service MegaUpload last week, people haven't stopped using file-hosting sites, according to TorrentFreak.

They're simply migrating to similar sites.

MegaUpload was one of the most popular video destinations on the Web, with 50 million users per day. According to data from TorrentFreak, since MegaUpload's shutdown, millions more people are racking up time on sites like Filefactory, Depositfiles, Hotfile.com, and other Internet locker services.

Last week, the U.S. Justice Department and FBI shut down MegaUpload and announced indictments against seven people on charges related to online piracy, including racketeering … Read more
