For those Android users lucky enough to have already received Android 4.4 KitKat on their preferred device, changing the default SMS app is possible, but very hidden.
After installing another SMS app you might be prompted by the app to set it as the default SMS provider. Doing so will allow the app to alert you to new messages, and handle any outgoing messages you compose via another app.
There are times when you either dismiss the prompt on accident, or you're not prompted at all, and thankfully Android 4.4 KitKat includes a system setting to change … Read more
Version 2.0 of Google Hangouts for Android now has SMS/MMS integration, as promised by Google back in May. It finally began rolling out to users on Thursday, and the feature adds convenience for people who use text messaging and Hangouts by unifying the two into a single app.
The first time you launch Hangouts after the update, you're prompted to enable SMS in Hangouts or try it later. If you opted to give SMS in Hangouts a try, but still prefer using separate apps, you can disable the SMS integration.
On devices running Android 4.3 or … Read more
News of the Helpouts launch leaked earlier today, after The Wall Street Journal received an e-mail about the product. The Web site for the service has actually been live since July so that potential experts could sign up and populate the marketplace.

According to the post, though the actual updates and change logs are missing, 16 Google apps have updated since Monday. I was able to download a Google Earth update on my Nexus 4 earlier today, but Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Wallet, and Keep remain unchanged.
Users of the iOS version of Google Hangouts can now place outgoing voice calls -- free to numbers in the US and Canada -- and can, if they're in the states and also have a Google Voice number, receive calls in the app as well.
The new feature is part of version 1.3.0 of Hangouts for iOS, which was released Friday night for the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod Touch.
Though Google isn't charging for calls to the states or to the Great White North, people phoning elsewhere will have to buy a calling credit … Read more
The underlying code that powers Android text messaging is about to get a makeover, and that could have far-reaching changes for how people text each other on Android 4.4 KitKat and beyond.
For non-developers, the changes will be practically unnoticeable. As the screenshot above indicates, soon you'll be able to choose a default SMS (Short Message Service) app through the Android operating system itself. Currently, the SMS app developer must make it an option in the app's settings.
It looks like Google's Hangouts app could soon absorb new communications abilities with integration of text and picture messaging, according to screenshots and a report that surfaced Monday.
Hangouts originally debuted as a video chat tool for Google+, but Google built into it the instant-messaging ability that formerly shipped in the Google Talk app for Android. Now it's possible that SMS and MMS services also could be built in, according to a report at Android Police.
Google has promised SMS integration into Hangouts, so the biggest question about the feature was when and how it would arrive.
