AVG Free provides the bare necessities when it comes to security, but that should be enough for savvy Windows users. You'll get a combined antivirus and antimalware engine, LinkScanner, and e-mail scanning. AVG Free 9 introduces a few new features, with improvements focused on performance, including claims of faster scan and boot times. One new feature is the Identity Theft Recovery Unit. AVG flags ZoneAlarm as malware

Grisoft, makers of AVG antivirus, on Wednesday released a new update addressing a false positive in another security product.

On Tuesday, AVG users reported desktops warnings that their desktop was infected with something called Trojan Agent r.CX. Some files within zlsSetup_70_483_000_en[1].exe, a compressed file containing dormant set-up files for Check Point's ZoneAlarm, apparently set off the alarm. The ZoneAlarm user forum soon filled with concerned users.

Why are criminals still exploiting an old patched vulnerability?

Within the last week, two large-scale releases of malicious code have included exploits for a vulnerability that Microsoft patched in April 2006. Massive SQL-based Web attack decoded

On Wednesday, the SANS Internet Storm Center and others published details about the massive SQL-based Web attack that occurred over the weekend. The attack, says SANS, is similar to a smaller SQL-injection attack seen in November. At least 70,000 sites were compromised in a short period of time, leading some to speculate this was an automated attack.

Grisoft acquires Exploit Prevention Labs

Grisoft, maker of AVG antivirus and Internet security software, on Wednesday announced the acquisition of Exploit Prevention Labs, maker of the LinkScanner family of safe Web-browsing applications.

Unlike other safe-surfing applications, which tend to rely on databases, LinkScanner uses technology that determines, as the page is downloaded onto your browser, whether it is tainted with malicious software.
