Even before I listened to the AKG K812 headphones I knew they were pretty special. First, they're so incredibly comfortable that after a few minutes it was easy to forget I was wearing a world-class headphone. One reason for that is with the K812, you never feel like you're cut off from the outside world -- you can hear everything around you. Once I started listening to tunes, that spacious quality remained and stereo imaging was wider and more outside my head than what I get from other headphones. Closed-back designs are always 100 percent closed, but open-backs … Read more
There are many types of headphones, and if you understand the pros and cons of each before you go shopping, you'll make a more informed buying decision. Closed- and open-back headphones sound very different and serve different needs. To learn more about how they differ I spoke with two engineers, Sennheiser's Axel Grell and AKG's Philipp Schuster, and thanks go out to them. Today I'll look at open- and closed-back headphones; I covered on- and over-the-ear headphones in yesterday's blog item.… Read more
The Koss Pro4AA has been around for ages, and when you listen you'll know why. Koss got the sound right the first time. And while contemporary headphones have more features and are lighter and more comfortable, they're nowhere as ruggedly built as the Pro4AA. This headphone will shrug off more than a few mishaps that would shatter to pieces a lot of 2013 designs.
So if you're rough on headphones, you might want to pick up a pair. And since they're covered by a lifetime warranty, Koss will keep repairing or replacing them forever. The warranty … Read more
Tamron will start shipping its SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD starting on January 17 in the US for a price of $1,069, the company said Sunday.
That's not too much higher than the company's $950 AF 200-500mm f/5.0-6.3 Di LD SP lens, which has a more restricted zoom range but no image stabilization. However, greater zoom ranges often come with optical compromises such as worse sharpness, distortion, and chromatic aberration.
The new supertelephoto has a flexible zoom range, though its aperture range of f5 at 150mm to f6.3 at 600mm … Read more
Tamron announced a new 150-600mm lens Thursday, a supertelephoto that will bring a broad 4x zoom range to sports and wildlife photographers.
The Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD is designed for Canon, Nikon, and Sony full-frame SLRs, the Japanese lensmaker said. The company will continue to sell its SP AF200-500mm F/5-6.3 Di LD IF, which has a narrower zoom range than the new model and lacks its vibration compensation (VC) technology to counteract camera shake.
The company didn't say when it would ship or how much the 150-600mm model would cost, but doubtless … Read more
Bass-emphasized headphones are now the norm, so much so that when I get to listen to more accurate headphones they really stand out. Not that I have anything against bass, readers of this blog who crave feel-it-in-your-bones bass had their turn with the JBL Synchros S700 headphones, so now it's time to go for a higher-resolution/clarity model with the new Phiaton Fusion MS 430 M-Series headphones ($179).
The earcups' carbon fiber inserts are a sleek styling touch, but the ear cushion's comfort levels are good, not great. While the headband padding may be a little lean for … Read more
You could plug in your old Nintendo Entertainment System, load up a vintage Super Mario Brothers cartridge, and play one of the greatest games of all time. Or you could just pop over to Full Screen Mario and get your fix online.
Josh Goldberg is behind this perfectly reproduced Super Mario remake done entirely with HTML5. If you're looking to switch things up and you like surprises, then you can play through randomly generated levels. Purists can stick with recreations of the levels from the original game.… Read more
If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that most people like bass, and they like more bass even more. I suppose JBL engineers know the same thing, and they made sure the new Synchros S700 over-the ear, closed-back headphones deliver incredibly deep bass.
Designwise, JBL avoided the slick, plastic look of Beats and other fashion-oriented 'phones. The Synchros S700's precision die-cast aluminum earcups look like they mean business, and the headband is steel-reinforced, so the headphones feel really solid. One other reason for that is the headband isn't hinged, so while it … Read more
