Xmarks may live on, in paid form

Earlier this week, free and cross-platform bookmark sync tool Xmarks announced it would be closing up shop come January of next year, but there may be some life left in it yet.

This morning, on the Xmarks company blog, CEO James Joaquin said that the company is "revisiting the idea of Xmarks as a premium service"--something it has never offered, and one of the factors that led to the company failing to turn a profit.

Foxmarks becomes Xmarks

Originally known as Foxmarks, Xmarks takes the original, bookmark-synchronizing concept behind the plug-in and mashes it with a style of Web site discovery reminiscent that should feel familiar to users of StumbleUpon or Del.icio.us.

Xmarks maintains its utility in this major update, retaining focus on synchronizing your bookmarks so you can access them from any computer running Firefox. Podcast: Foxmarks changes name, adds services

Larry Magid of CNET and CBS News talks with James Joaquin, CEO of what was Foxmarks and is now Xmarks. The company is best known for the Firefox extension that backs up and synchronizes bookmarks. That product now also works on Internet Explorer and Apple Safari allowing users to synchronize between browsers and computers. The company also offers a free bookmark backup service as well as web access to bookmarks, site suggestions and ability to share bookmarks.

Foxmarks becomes Xmarks, does site discovery

Foxmarks, the browser bookmark utility, is getting new features and a new brand at Demo 09.

Now known as just Xmarks (download), the tool layers in site discovery features. The Xmarks plug-in shows you sites similar to the one you're on, based on what other users have bookmarked and where they've filed those bookmarks. The plug-in also gives you additional information in search results, letting you see site popularity and user ratings on your search hits.

Foxmarks syncs your passwords across PCs

A browser's built-in password database makes it easy to log in to personal or secure sites you visit frequently without having to type in your password each time. But if you use more than one computer (say, one at home and another at work), then you have to enter in your password at least once on each machine. No current browser that I know of lets you synchronize your preferences, like passwords and bookmarks, across multiple installations of their product.
