Facebook tests a new ad strategy

CNET Update is watching where you click:

Update highlights Facebook's Plan B for advertising in the News Feed. Instead of just showing you sponsored stories based on your profile, Facebook is tracking your Web browsing habits to serve targeted ads in the News Feed. If not done right, this can turn away users who are already uneasy over privacy.

Have a used item you don't think will sell on eBay? A new program could still fill your pockets with half the proceeds.

Recently launched on a test basis, "Sell it Forward" lets you send your used items to eBay in a free, postage-paid bag. From there, eBay hands them over to the San Francisco Bay Area branch of Goodwill Industries. If Goodwill can unload the items within 14 days, you score a 50 percent cut of the sales price, which is sent to your PayPal account. If not, you get a receipt for a donation that … Read more

Move your mail to Outlook.com

Multiple e-mail inboxes are a fact of life for most of us. At last count I had six mail accounts I access regularly and another six addresses I use occasionally.

That didn't prevent me from signing up for a new Outlook.com address when Microsoft announced the service last week.

At first I was disappointed that I wasn't able to transfer my existing Hotmail account to Outlook.com. Instead, I was prompted to link the new Outlook.com account with the existing Hotmail account.

However, once I had imported my Gmail to Microsoft's new service I was … Read more

Google future-proofs your e-mail, documents from spies

Google is strengthening the encryption on Gmail and other services so that messages stored today can't easily be decrypted later by faster computers using brute force methods.

The company is enabling what is called "forward secrecy" by default, Adam Langley from Google's security team, wrote in a blog post yesterday.

"Most major sites supporting HTTPS operate in a non-forward secret fashion, which runs the risk of retrospective decryption. In other words, an encrypted, unreadable email could be recorded while being delivered to your computer today," he wrote. "In ten years time, when computers … Read more

Forwarding in Lion Mail leaving attachments behind

In Apple's Mail application you can organize incoming mail messages by setting up rules to filter and place messages in mailboxes, run scripts, or forward messages to different accounts.

NASA puts the pee in potable water

Soon, we will not only be able to drink our recycled urine. We'll transform into a tastier, more refreshing beverage choice--thanks, in part, to NASA's final space shuttle mission.

The shuttle Atlantis, scheduled to launch today, is carrying aloft tests of the Forward Osmosis Bag, which is designed to convert dirty water into a liquid that is safe to drink using a semi-permeable membrane and a concentrated sugar solution. According to NASA, the FOB test "looks at the forward osmosis membrane in a space flight environment and compares its performance against ground reference controls." It's … Read more

Forward with Ford 2011: Designing the modern car

DEARBORN, Mich.--The car design game has come a long way since the pad and paper Lee Iacocca and his team used to design the first Mustang in 1964. To show the high-tech tools that give birth to cars these days, Ford Motor Company rolled out a look behind the scenes at its 2011 Forward with Ford conference here.

A major theme for the design portion of Forward with Ford was the automaker's focus on the "global convergence of design," or the concept that social media and other world-shrinking technologies are merging concepts of design expectations and preferences among consumers. Cars must look as good on French roundabouts as they do on American freeways, and the qualifications for that motorway beauty are becoming increasingly similar from consumer to consumer and country to country. … Read more

Forward with Ford 2011: Green cars inside and out

DEARBORN, Mich.--The 2011 Forward with Ford conference here last week gave outsiders a look at Ford Motor Company's push to makes its cars greener.

Actor and activist Ed Begley, Jr. joined Ford Motors' Sherif Marakby to discuss the company's ongoing efforts to electrify cars. Ford develops three levels of greener vehicles--hybrids (like the Ford Fusion hybrid), plug-in hybrids (like the Ford CMAX Energi), and all-electric vehicles (like the Ford Focus Electric). Ford is hip to the 2011 Maritz Research study reporting that 42 percent of all consumers consider fuel economy "extremely important" when buying a new vehicle. So, Ford delivers 12 vehicles that get 40 mpg or higher in EPA highway testing. … Read more
