HelloFax CEO Jospeh Walla wants to kill printers and scanners -- doing away with them one digital signature at a time.

For $200, the Epson WorkForce 845 isn't meant for light-duty use; such would be a waste of its features.

On top of the standard printing, scanning, faxing, and copying you get with most all-in-one machines, this guy also packs in an 8-inch touch-screen control panel and two adjustable input trays that can hold up to 500 total sheets of paper (photo or otherwise), and you can connect it to a computer via USB or a wireless network.

You'll get the most use out of that last function, because it means you'll also be able to use Epson's e-mail print feature. Each WorkForce 845 has a unique e-mail address, so when you're away from the printer you can just attach a document to a message and send it off to that e-mail address, and it'll be waiting for you in the printer.

It works for office-friendly documents like presentations, Web sites, and spreadsheets, but don't take the "WorkForce" name too seriously--it's just as good for family members who want to send quick photos to Grandma, and you can use any device with an Internet connection to send print jobs.

None of those features would prove useful without the printing horsepower to back it up, and the WorkForce 845 certainly performed well in our speed and quality tests. No surprise there, as it's powered by the same print engine as the Editors' Choice Award-winning Epson WorkForce 840.

The WorkForce 845 topped the competition in three out of the four print speed tests we put it through, and we'd put its print quality up against any of the other devices on our Best 5 Printers list.

Not to be outdone by HP's cloud printing announcement today, Kodak also unveiled a slew of new devices today that will support Google Cloud Print and Kodak Email print. You'll need a Google account to access both new features, but eventually you'll be able to e-mail print jobs directly to any Kodak printers past and present, as long the device has built-in wireless access. To kick things off, Kodak unveiled a new portfolio of office-friendly multifunction printers called the Heros.

HP held its annual Imaging and Printing Conference in Shanghai today, where the company announced plans to build out its business imaging division with 13 new printers designed to grease the workflow for small to midsize businesses. Along with hardware announcements, HP also unveiled new consumer features like ePrint Wireless Direct that lets users print with a smartphone without the need for an Internet connection; an advanced HP Printer Control app (PDF) for iOS devices; and a twist on HP ePrint called SocialID, which lets you assign a custom e-mail address that makes it easier for multiple users to print in the cloud.

One of the new product offerings you'll see soon is the HP LaserJet M275 (PDF), a multifunction printer with new TopShot Scanning that's essentially the reverse of 3D printing: the scanner bed can capture a 3D image of any object placed on the top-mounted tray.

This workhorse laser targets SMBs, so it can only hold up to 150 sheets of paper, but it also features ePrint and is fully compatible with Apple AirPrint so you can output images and documents directly from your iOS devices.… Read more

Back-to-school shoppers looking for a space-saving printer to fit in a dorm room may find a match in Epson's newest desktop printer, the Stylus NX430. The company is so proud of its ultracompact chassis that it's inventing a new category for it, along the same lines as the Ultrabook, except the printer version is being touted as the Small-in-One. Despite its small stature, the NX430 competes with larger models with an ample 2.5-inch touch panel and a vibrant screen for light-duty photo editing directly on the machine, superquiet operation, and the mobile benefits of Epson Connect, another proprietary way to print from the cloud by sending jobs to a unique e-mail address assigned to each printer.… Read more

Fish-eye lenses and toy cameras make us all nostalgic for sun-bleached summer days, but they don't always take the best-resolution photos. Today, Canon adds two new Pixma photo printers to its multifunction lineup that let you add fun filters to any digital photo using Easy-PhotoPrint EX software.

PIXMA MG8220 and MG6220 All-in-Ones (AiO) are both optimized for the amateur photographer with features like built-in Wi-Fi for cordless setup, six individual ink tanks for vivid images and cartridge conservation, and Canon's convenient Intelligent Touch control panel that only illuminates the commands necessary for each function.

We got a first glimpse at this feature on the Canon Pixma MG6120 and found it intuitive and easy to use.

Both printers also make use of Canon's HD Movie Print that lets you pull still-frame snapshots out of videos recorded with compatible Canon HD video cameras, like the Canon PowerShot Elph 510 HS, just released today.

Finally, Canon's latest print technology, called Cloud Link, helps you pull images and documents to print straight from Picasa or Canon's online Image Gateway repository without ever going back to your computer. You can also download and print templates like calendars, to-do lists, stationary, and more--both printers offer Cloud Link printing out of the box, but you have to have a wireless network setup to access the content.

So what's the difference between the two? The MG6220 will debut at $200 when it goes on sale later this year, but the $100 increase for the MG8220 nets you an additional Film Adapter Unit for converting older and negatives to digital format of your choice, as well as a larger 3.5-inch LCD screen, and auto-duplexing for double-sided printing.
