Hitachi turns to external storage, acquires Fabrik

When I reviewed Fabrik's SimpleTech Signature Mini and SimpleTech (re)drive external hard drives a while ago, I liked its tasteful designs. As it turns out, my taste wasn't so peculiar.

Hitachi on Monday announced its decision to acquire Fabrik, a privately held supplier of personal and professional storage solutions.

If you haven't heard of Fabrik, this is because it has been selling external storage under two better-known brands: G-Technology and SimpleTech. CNET has reviewed several products launched under each brand.

Although the financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, Hitachi made it clear that Fabrik'… Read more

Fabrik's product is called Joggle and is based on the AIR platform from Adobe, which launched last year.

Cellblock: Handy group photoblog widget

Cellblock is an interesting live photo dropbox. Images or videos sent to a user's Cellblock e-mail address are displayed immediately on said user's Cellblock widgets.

Here's a use case: Say I set up a "cellblock" (as each account is called) for a trade show I am attending, and I embed a widget for that show's cellblock in my blog. Then every time I take a camera-phone image from the show and send it via MMS or e-mail to the e-mail address of the cellblock, the photo immediately shows up in the blog's widget. … Read more

Fabrik's new file transfer and stream service is too simple for its own good

It's a straightforward service that has two purposes: it helps you transfer large files (up to a gigabyte), and it lets you upload media files and easily insert a streaming player for the media into your site or blog.

The service is very basic, and yet it still supports several media types intelligently: you can use it to transfer files, stream video, play audio, and also to create slide shows and filmstrips. Here's a Fabrik Lite … Read more
