Huawei unveils Discovery Expedition

Earlier this year, we told you about the National Geographic-themed Samsung B2100 Xplorer. If you don't remember, it was the durable handset in bright red that was packed with features for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts.

This time around, Huawei is tackling the general theme while taking a slightly different route for getting there. The manufacturer announced today that it was partnering with the Discovery Channel to launch a new phone called the Discovery Expedition.

The Discovery Expedition, which sports a bright-orange skin, has a rugged candy bar design that's water-resistant, dustproof, and shock-resistant. Features include GPS, a flashlight, … Read more

Visually stunning puzzle

It's not often that we have mixed feelings about a game; typically it's either enjoyable or it isn't, and isn't that the entire point of playing a game? When it comes to Tomb of Giza, though, we're just not sure how we feel.

The game's graphics are simply outstanding; it's a little bit like stepping into an "Indiana Jones" movie. The music and sound effects are intense. Everything about the visuals and audio is well-done and professional, and with that aspect of the game we are quite definitely impressed. The reason … Read more

The 404 309: Where Tom Avery still can't feel his big toes

World explorer Tom Avery joins the 404 today to talk about how he's conquered both the North and South Poles of our great planet Earth. Boy, does it make Justin feel terrible about his life, Wilson know he'll be eaten like in the movie "Alive," and Jeff promise to beat Tom on his next journey.

Normally, The 404 is kind of a technology show, but more often it is not. Today is one of those days where we take a break from our virtual Wii Tennis game and get into the nitty gritty of life, man! Wanna know what it's like to run out of food in the middle of the cold artic? How to cross an ocean of constantly moving ice? What about having to decide whether to eat your dog or starve to death?

Well, Tom Avery tells us and you about his adventures, and we promise it's a good story. Apparently, when you fall through the ice into cold water, the first thing you should do is run as quickly as possible. Don't hold us to that, but that's what Mr. Avery says to do. No Twitter from the North Pole and no Santa Claus, either.

Our caption contest is still going on. Make your best caption for this photo of Justin. Call us at 1-866-404-CNET (2638), or shoot us an e-mail at the404 [at] cnet [dot] com. It's your chance to win a copy of Wheelman for the Xbox 360. Vin Diesel kicks some major boo-tay.

Here are some good entries:

Timex gets outdoorsy with Expedition WS4

By now, you've probably gotten used to expecting a lot more from a smartphone than just the ability to place calls. Do you know that watches can now do a lot more than just tell time?

To wit, watch maker Timex announced on Monday its latest evolution in outdoor time-keeping instruments, the Timex Expedition WS4.

The WS4 is designed to perform under extreme conditions and … Read more

Ford rides with Foose and Flex

Ford introduced three distinctly diverse limited-run 2008 models at the New York Auto show this week.

The envy of the truck stop: The 2007 Ford Expedition

Fed up with the withering death-stares we were getting from other drivers on the streets of San Francisco, we decided to take our 2007 Ford Expedition review car somewhere more welcoming. We found exactly what we were looking for among the tractor trailers and disused warehouses of an industrial estate just south of the city. There, we could just sit with the Expedition's 5.4-liter V-8 idling away and feel right at home next to other pieces of mammoth machinery.

We did have a few more creature comforts than the other truckers around us, however. The Expedition comes with … Read more
