Instagram kicks off New Year's Eve with worldwide photo stream

Millions of Instagram users are documenting their night as confetti is thrown, party horns are blown, and revelers count down to 2013. The photo-sharing social network has decided to put all of these photos in one place -- a desktop-optimized New Year's Eve photo stream.

"We love seeing photos shared from all different parts of the world," Instagram wrote in a blog post today. "At instagram.com/nye, you can see photos from every part of the world as the clock strikes midnight in a given time zone."

Electric vehicle concepts hint at a three-wheeled future

Convincing a nation so steeped in its car culture to think differently about the way we drive is a test of both patience and persistence. But the 2012 Vehicle Concept Showcase at Stanford University's Center for Automotive Research yesterday offered some interesting arguments about how our future personal transportation will better suit our needs.

One feature that may take some adjustment for many drivers is wheel configuration. Only two of the eight vehicle concepts rolled out at the showcase had the tried and true four-wheel configuration -- most were three-wheelers. As the makers of Switch Vehicles pointed out, dropping … Read more

Ring in the New Year with your face on the JumboTron

Planning to cram yourself into Times Square on New Year's Eve with half a million of your closest funbuddies?

Kodak wants to help you kick the drunken revelry up a notch this year. Instead of just hanging out waiting for the energy-efficient ball to drop, you'll be able to upload photos of the festivities to a shared album on Kodak Gallery, which will then be live-streamed--though hopefully moderated--to the JumboTron atop the Marriott Marquis. … Read more

A TV New Year's Eve to remember

Early in my career, I was assigned as the production supervisor for CBS New Year's Eve with Guy Lombardo (look it up, people under 40).

My assignment was not the fancy Waldorf Astoria where Guy and the band entertained high-paying New Year's Eve revelers. I was the "guy" who was freezing his butt off across town in Times Square at our little CBS mobile unit on 45th Street and Broadway.

The Guy Lombardo New Year's Eve special was the No. 1 New Year's Eve entertainment special for more than a decade, simulcast on TV … Read more

Santa Claus is coming to town on a 1.0-liter EcoBoost fitted Ford sleigh

If Ford engineers had their way, Santa Claus would be delivering packages to all the good girls and boys on Christmas Eve in a Ford sleigh concept.

The muscle car-inspired, bright-red, concept sleigh is powered by a 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine and boasts 125 horsepower, with 170Nm peak torque (with 200Nm overboost)--giving it the highest power density of any Ford production engine to date.

Ford engineers apparently presented the concept sleigh design to Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with its environmental and cost-saving advantages.

Each Christmas Eve, Jolly Old St. Nick reportedly circumnavigates the globe--124,421,727 miles--in a … Read more

Insane MMORPG rig links six computers at once

You're really into MMORPGs when you spend hours repeating the same tasks over and over again to acquire gold. You're way, way too into MMORPGs when you create a custom six-computer setup to do it that much faster.

Zhek Kromtor's "Frankenstein" setup lets him play several EVE Online accounts at the same time so he can farm for gold and minerals more efficiently. Just look at those janky six-way keyboards and mice that let him control everything at once!

You see, Kromtor was temporarily banned for running multiple accounts on one computer at the same time. It's against the rules! But doing this, apparently, is not. Probably because they never thought anyone would be crazy enough to do it. But never underestimate the desire of an addict to get that sweet, sweet gold. More images after the jump. … Read more

Times Square New Year's Eve Ball, a timeline

The 102-year history of the Times Square New Year's Even Ball is one filled with technology, death and, of course, pretty shiny lights. See it all unfold in our historical timeline.

Of course, for those who don't appreciate the festivity of the ball drop, despite all of the hard work behind the scenes, feel free to ignore the ball's 32,256 glimmering Philips LEDs and turn your attention to your iPhone...because, yes, Waterford has made an app for that.

Happy New Year everyone!

Santa's Sleigh is a Race Car???

It's less than 12 hours before I will be leaving on a jet plane for a holiday in Ohio with my family, so I'm gonna keep this short: I figured for the Xmas Eve edition of this video blog, I'd present something fun and festive, and I thought this little video from 2000 would suit the bill. Basically what we got here is a 12 Hours of Sebring race car float was morphed into a bright and cute "Santa's Sleigh" for a Xmas parade in Sarasota, Florida. The beginning of the vid shows some … Read more

Canadian Carriers adding to their Android repertoire

Canadian smartphone enthusiasts soon will have their pick of multiple new Google Android handsets. Both Motorola and LG recently announced deals for two different carriers.

LG's first Android handset, the GW620 Eve, is headed for Robers. The handset boasts a 3.2-inch touch screen, a 5-row slideout QWERTY keyboard and 5-megapixel camera. Based on the commercials and promotional videos that we've seen it appears that LG is going right for the social networking enthusiast.

The Eve has a few unique features built into a stock Android 1.5 build that might appeal to younger demographics or people buying … Read more
